Default 99 Scrambler awd disable?

I have a 99 scrambler 2 stroke 4x4, and its kind of a pain in the *** when you spin the tires and one wheel will kick in and send you flyin in direction or another because just one front wheel will kick in because of the On Demand 4x4 .. i was wonderin if theres an easy way to disable the 4x4 so that it doesn't kick in when then back wheels are spinning. I would like to disable this without losing the AWD all together, but if needed be, i will live without 4x4 so that this will not happen anymore.. any advice or suggestions?

I thought there was a switch on those that you could turn it off and on from the factory. My sportsman's all have them. I even own a 99 sportsman right now on the right handle bar the is a awd on off switch. Not sure of the scramblers at all but they should be close.

Yes it has the switch but the switch just locks in all 4 hubs .. but when you turn off the switch .. it puts the bike in 2wd .. but when it senses that the back wheels are spinnin faster than the front wheels it thinks that for example it is in mud and losing traction .. therefore it kicks in a front wheel or two to gain extra traction until it stops spinning .. so if you are doin a donut .. it senses that its losing traction and will kick in one tire.. which in turn cranks the bars in one direction or the other .. and can actually end up deadly lol .. i purchased this bike off my brother and the second day he has it .. he was doin fishtails up an old fireroad .. and one of the tires kicked in and sent him thro the bush .. breaking all the plastics on the bike .. i dont think its a good invention, which is why im wondering if theres a way to disable it so that the tires don't kick in when its losing traction .. or disable the 4wd all together..

i don't think your 4wd is functioning properly, with the switch off the awd should be off with no power to the front hubs. have you changed your hub fluid latley or inspected the parts for wear or shavings of metal

My 99 scrambler does the same thing. I noticed it when I was doin donuts. One of the front wheels would kick in when it sensed the back were spinning. Now I just do donuts in 4wd....lol

Well lets hope some other scrammy owners chime in cause on my sportsman, yes i know not a scrammy I can do donuts when the switch is off and get stuck, no awd when my switch is in the off position I tried it on ice about a week ago and found I could not even spin enough in 2wd but in all wheel drive the thing was a spinnin. I'll check with my buddy who had one once and see if his did that too. Also thats got to be down right scary to have that thing kick in like that!

Yes your 4wd is not working properly this is a fact I can do donuts all day long when the switch is off and none of my fronts will kick in until I flick the switch.

change your fluid first and make sure it is to the proper level if this does not fix it then check to make sure there is no power going to your fronts when the switch is not engaged and if that does not work take your hubs apart and look for worn parts in the clutch.

I would go as far as disassembling the front hubs and inspecting all. When the front hubs come in at will especially while the rears are already spinning, that really puts a strain on all the parts. Clean out all and reassemble, new fluid all should be OK.

humm .. this has me wondering now? i'll check the fluids on the weekend, whenever i get sometime, i tinker with it and tear the front end apart, but i noticed that only one guy said that his did that too .. and his was the other only 1999 400 scrambler, im wondering if maybe it was somethin they did and realized it was a bad idea? lol changed in the next year.. seems unlikely but just a thought
