Hi everyone, i hope there is someone who can help me with this. i have a 1982 honda 110 atc. It starts on the first pull and runs for a few minutes and when you give it the throttle the engine bogs down and seems like the choke is on but is not, and then stalls out, after this i take the spark plug out, and it is covered in carbon. after i clean the plug and put it back in, i am able to start it. but it does the same thing over. i have bought a carb kit for it and took it apart and cleaned it and replaced the components, but this did not help. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

 

Is there lots of exhaust comming out the pipe ..?

 

And does it start easy without the choke?

 

no theres not much exhaust coming out the pipe, only when i tried to start it after sitting a real long time

Your idle air screw may be set too tight, or the passage is obstructed. If it starts easily without the choke, this is often the case. Not enough air at idle = too much gas and a black sooty spark plug. They will usually still run good when you are on the throttle, unless the plug is too badly fouled. I don't have the specs handy for the starting point, but turn the screw in all the way (don't over tighten) counting the number of turns so you know where you started. Most that I have worked on have had an intial setting between 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 turns out from fully seated. Then adjust in or out a little for best idle once the machine is fully warmed up. I usually back it out until the idle is affected, then in again until it is affected, and the go for the middle.

And change your sprark plug.

 

ok, thanks i'll give that a try and see what happens. i had to leave yesterday so i won't be able to work on it for a about another week, i drive truck so i don't ever have much time to work on things around the house, but when i get home i will try that, and i'll post the results. thanks alot
