Worst day of riding... ever

K, so I go out digging and the guy who had it before me put the lug nuts on backwards... so they started bouncing out and I damaged my studs. On top of that I lost my key... How much is it to get a new key from the dealer?

I am hoping it will be easy for the dealer to get me a new Key and I dont have to take out the cyl thing and bring it to someone to make a key for it.

If you didn't write down the key code from the original key.
(the # can be found on the side of the ignition switch, you have to strip down the console to get it) Up here in Canada it cost me around 75.00 +- For a regular key.
Not the rubber coated one!!!!! from the friendly dealer.
You can buy a new ignition switch off ebay with 2 rubber keys for about 60.00+-
I think the install is pretty straight forward, I'm not sure of any computer stuff that may be required with the new switch.

Had the same thing happen to me once, but I was the only one at fault! Put lugs on backwards, worked themselves loose, and by the time I realised what was going on the studs were f'd and the holes in the wheel were all egged out! Was about 4 hrs from home, so all it took was a trip to a local hardware store for some nuts, washers etc. Then had to replace all the studs and both wheels when I got home! Will never make that mistake again! As for the key, if you cant get a good deal from the stealer for a new key, I would do as Seemer said and get a replacement ignition off ebay. Should just be a couple of splices, or terminations, and you'll be good to go.

yah my wifes ex 300 is missing the key, it is only a switch so nothing to do with the computer.
I didn't want to shell out the key $ so i switched her hi low beAm light switch to the on off switch ( her high beams are like my low beams) and plugged the hole where the key went with a large round auto trim clip (the large kind in old vans to hold the ceiling up and a nut and washer on the other side ) and a blue diode on the gas tank to let me know the bike is on.
the kid i bought it from musta rolled it something fierce , i'm just finally gettin it perfect after 2 months a tinkerin....it s only a year old!

Another option for the key is call a locksmith you might get lucky
Another option is something I did on a Honda 300 is get a on-off-on double terminal switch for about $8 and then you use one set of terminals for the on/off and you use the other side for the kill. Take a big washer and put it in the key hole.
Worked for a year till I exploded the rear end -28" outlaws and a fallen tree is a bad combination on a 2 wheel drive)

hey you might want to try something i have had to do before. Take the key and stick it in the ignition and turn it back and forth a couple of times and then pull it out. you should be able to faintly see were the key is hitting. take a small file and cut away the part that is hitting. You might get lucky, I have about a 50/50 rate of success
