Default Does anybody have an extra chain adjusting rod? Or know the part number???

Well if anyone has followed my previous thread(s) (plural as there are about 3-4 of them on the same topic...lol) I had some serious issues doing a bearing job on my 2001 730. The main reason I was doing it was to pull the axle carrier out as it has frozen up inside the swingarm (not allowing me to adjust my chain). After some serious headaches everything went back together. It was so late I just loosely tightened the chain and let it be for the night (note it was a BEAR to adjust, even after cleaning it off and reinstalling!).

After rolling the quad a bit and getting it off the stands the chain tightened up considerably (its almost completely taught...no slack at all!) I figure hey, no problem ill just adjust it...wrong! The stock bomb rod I was already using has seen better days but ended up completely bent sideways and almost didnt come out. I went to the hardware store and bought an equal O.D. grade A bolt..and it snapped off inside the carrier (luckily i got the end out with a magnet!).

SO...now im back at square one...only this time my chain is TOO tight, not loose! I am in desperate need of an OEM bomb chain adjuster. Anybody have an extra in their tool box they will part with? I will happily pay for it + shipping.

If nobody has an extra, does anyone know the part number for it? I have heard it only comes with the tool kit, which hopefully I dont have to buy (its probably like 30 bucks knowing bomb!).

Thanks in advance guys!

Most everyone I know has a phillips screwdriver with a small kink in it from chain adjustment. Thats what I use.

well ive tried that, but I need the stock adjuster as my carrier does NOT like to rotate in the housing! I have snapped two screw drivers, an allen wrench, now a GRADE A BOLT! and they all snapped off. The only thing that didnt snap (just bent) was the stock bomb chain rod, so im hoping to locate one. The amount of force I have to use to rotate my carrier is crazy...

Maybe you need to get some impact force on it. If its frozen some tap's to help it get loose may be the trick... if you are snapping hardened tools it sounds frozen to me. You could also get a piece of round stock and cut it into pieces, but if your snapping hardened tools anything made from mild steel will certainly bend. All I'm saying is I don't think you need to go to the trouble of getting the stock adjusting rod, find something that will work. The stocker is nothing special.

Roost, I know you do not want to hear this, but it really sounds like you need the new carrier..... It should not be anywhere near that hard to turn...

I agree with Dragon, I replaced my carrier bearings last year and now it adjusts really easy with an allen wrench.

Well see the thing is... I just pulled the whole damn thing apart, cleaned it all up and replaced the bearings, and its just as hard to turn! A few minutes after it all went back together, it adjusted easier than it does now (easy is a very relative term here...as its NOT turning now...and the night I put everything back together it took all of my 6'1 - 230 lbs bear-hugging the tire (was in the air on jack stands) to get it to move just a little at a time....If only I had made sure it was the proper adjustment then!

I guess I am confused as to what the problem is... I originally figured it was just dirt/grime/sand trapped in between the carrier itself and the swinger housing...but even after cleaning it up well it was a PITA to tap back into the swinger, and still dosnt rotate!

For those of you who have done it...how hard was it to get your carrier in/out of the swinger? Mine was nearly impossible to get out (probably related to the fact that I cant rotate it...lol). It took 3 guys a block of maple and a big sledge hammer to get this thing out, and then also back in. i just dont understand what the problem could be...is the inside of the swinger (its an aftermarket +1 swinger) gripping the carrier too well?

Just a note...all the times im trying to adjust it I also had all 4 bolts out, and even had screwdrivers/sockets wedged in where the bolts go (opening it up 1/4 inch more than it is at rest) and it still barely moves...

Soooo...anybody know what a stock carrier runs? The only aftermarket one that is still around is the dual row carrier (its billet) but its also like 200 bucks!

I remember my old 2003 adjusted with just a screwdriver or allen wrench and a light push on the back end to roll it/adjust it, and I didnt even maintain that one as well as I try to do with the 730! (that one saw a lot of sloppy conditions!)

thanks guys!

***EDIT*** I just thought of something... I didnt pay real close attention when I cleaned out the inside of the swinger housing (just sprayed some pb blast in there and wiped everything out with a clean rag, until I couldnt see any debris/grease etc left in there). but think its possible there is powdercoat inside the swinger housing, thus making the fit inside the swinger MUCH tighter than it should be? Thats the only thing I can come up with! I dont see how the carrier could warp...unless it was warped the first time it went in, thus making it hard/impossible to adjust as long as I have had it?
