looking at a used 2001 sportsman 90 with what the owner says it needs a coil. is there a coil on a 2001 or would it be the cdi box? any help would be great!

To answer your question about the coil yes there is a coil on it. But to answer the question on which one it is i have to know what it is doing wrong. I can assume that you are not getting any spark. But that can also be the stator which is somewhat common problem. You will have to check the coil and stator with a multimeter and get some ohm readings.
