Default Proper Use of AWD System

ATV is a 99 500 Magnum 4x4 and I am new to it and have heard that it can be put into AWD on the move like a 4x4 pickup- 2 versions though, 1-only while in High Gear, 2-It didn't matter High or Low as long as it was not under harsh conditions. I also have heard that I should NEVER attempt to engage while moving, what is the proper use of the system? Thanks for any and all time spent answering this for me guys. MaineWheeler

The most important thing to remember is never put it into 4wd while the rear wheels are spinning(not moving)but spinning. It does not matter if it is in low or high!! Happy trails.

yeah like 800 says if your spinning your rear tires, weather its on gravel, snow, mud, especially stuck+spinning, dont push the button cause,it will slam into the hubs or diff, with a greater degree of force than normal, usually shattering the hilliard clutch.there is a safety rev limiter that doesnt allow engagment but you can still destroy at lower rpm.

But if it does slam into 4wd while in a stand still spin, the old hub system has a much higher probability of survival then the new front diff with its plastic cage. Thank for the reverse improvement Polaris.

If it works change it.

As the others said....Hi or low.....The front wheels must be equal in RPM to the rear.....Could be 0 rpms, could be 60 mph......As long as there is no speed difference between the front and rear wheels. As soon as you hit AWD, the speeds will instantly be syncronized. If there is a big differencein rpm, it puts severe shock on the driveline. Maine here too. What city/town are you in?

So if I'm understanding all -- If I am just rolling along and NOT spinning my rear tires as stuck and spinning I CAN engage the AWD system - A for instance is, I'm going down the trail NOT stuck just cruising and I see/know there is a bad mud spot ahead I can kick in the AWD sys as long as its BEFORE I get into it and ALL 4 wheels are still spinning at the same speed.----On my 99 the AWD system is in each INDIVIDUAL front hub NOT the center differential. Does the above info still apply?

with my hawkeye, you can engage AWD anytime and it just waits until it gets to a preset rpm to engage. the only time you shouldnt engage AWD is when the rear wheels are already spinning, like ure in 2wd in mud and switch it to AWD with rear wheels spinning because it will jerk the front wheels to engage.
