nned help with my kodiak 450
#1
i am having a few problems out of my 05 kodiak 450. 1. the oil just seems to disappear i can add oil and top it off and check it 5 minutes later the dipstick will say empty. 2.its smoking pretty bad when you hit the throttle and the smoke is white. at first i thought this was because of the oil but still does it right after changing the oil and topping it off. 3. The display screen will not come on. when i turn the key on the green background comes up but nothing else will. Has anyone else had these problems? Any suggestions?
Thanks

Sounds like your engine is done... Especially if after filling it and 5 minutes later says it is Empty... Doh! You need a re-ring at a minimum.... When you have white smoke that equals burnt oil burnt oil happens from trashed oil rings or worse case trashed compression rings / scored cylinder/ etc
I would stop driving it IMMEDIATELY!

buggyrider Try a can of Sea Foam in your engine oil and in your gas tank , mixing direction's are on the can ; it could be carbon deposit's in the combustion chamber causing the ring's to stick and allow oil to pass the ring's causing the engine to smoke and burn oil !
Here is 1 example of how good Sea Foam is , and this time i'lll try to keep it short enough for anyone to understand !
My 88' Jimmy was smoking after it got hot , after it jumped time i put a 16 oz can of Sea Foam in the gas tank that had 21 gallons of over $3.00 a gallon's gas , after i got it fixed i drove it untill i had used a half tank ; then i topped off the tank with fresh fuel and on the way home it stopped smoking !
One year later and still no smoke , it was carbon deposit's inside the combustion chamber that was causing it to smoke and burn oil ; so try a can of Sea Foam what do you have to lose ?
Sea Foam cost about $6.99 + Tax at most Auto Parts Stores , $5.49 + Tax at WalMart ; and this product come's with a money back Garrantte and has been on the market since 1942 any product that's been on the market this long and still has a money back Garranttee has to be good !
How was that pmcc37 ? Is that short enough for you , i'm not saying that i know for sure this will fix buggyrider18's Quad ; but for the price of a can of Sea Foam compared to a tear down and overhaul it's worth a shot !

buggyrider white smoke is gas smoke that usually mean's it getting fuel in the engine oil or engine oil in the intake to carb , and it's also a sign that the ring's are sticking causing the smoking ; i had this problem with my 88' GMC S1500 Jimmy 4x4 MPV the ring's were sticking causing it to smoke after it got hot !
But it wasn't dumping the oil like you're talking about , can you find any place where it's leaking oil ? Check your air box to see if it's dumping the oil in the air box ; i've seen this happen before from just a stopped up Air Filter !
But When i would stop for a traffic light and have to wait on it to change to green , when i stepped on the gas to go there would be a Cloud of White and Blue Smoke come out of the exhaust pipe's and it would clear up once i got going ; but it got worsh everytime i drove it !
After a few week's it jumped time when i started it up in my driveway i had to let it sit up a year and a half while i saved up for the part's to repair the JIMMY , at the time it had almost a full tank of gas 21 gallon's at over $3.00 a gallon ; i poured a 16 oz can of Sea Foam in the tank and had 2 of my brother's shake the Jimmy to mix the fuel and Sea Foam together so the gas wouldn't go bad before i could get it fixed !
My 1988 GMC S1500 Jimmy 4x4 MPV had over 303 thousand mile's on it at the time i bought it from a Used Car Dealer who told me it had a new engine and Drivetrain with only 87,000 miles on them , i didn't believe the Used Car Dealer though ; because i use to work for 3 different used Car Lot's and i knew how they would stand there and look you in the eyes and lie like a rug !
It was alway's this Car Was Owned By A " Little Old Lady that only drove it to Church on Sunday's , And It Was Down Hill Both Way's " , this was standard practice in the used car business so i didn't believe him for a second ; but it turned out to be true after all but i didn't think so untill i used the Sea Foam the only thing i knew that was rebuilt was the Mad Dog Lockup Torq Converter the Electronic Shift had been bypassed with this Lockup Torq Converter !
A year and a half later i bought the Timing Chain and Gear Set , Gasket's , New Starter and a New Flywheel ; then i took it down to a freind to fix it ; after he got it going i had to drive it over to another freind's Garage to have the Timing Set with a Timing Light and have him remove the cap in the throddle body to get to the Low Idle Speed Screw so he could turn up the Low Idle Speed At first my freind said it didn't have an adjustment screw untill i told him it was capped off and i showed him on the throddle body !
He had to use a grease rag to wipe off the dirt on the throddle body , then he said you're right it does have an adjustment screw ; he had to use an awl and a small hammer to punch a hole in the access cap and pop it out to get to the adjustment screw the engine wouldn't idle after warmup untill he turned up the low idle speed screw !
My freind didn't know about the adjustment screw even though he had a Chevy S10 SLE ShortBed Pickup , he told me his S10 wouldn't idle once and he had to by a low idle speed unit that he thought was bad he ask me how i knew my Jimmy had a low speed idle adjustment screw ; i told him it was in the Haynes Service and Repair Shop manual i bought when i bought my 1987 Chevy S10 Tahoe Longbed Pickup !
After i drove it 20 mile's it started the smoking again , the guy who installed the timing chain and gear set told me the timing chain was stretched ; i ask him then if that could've been what cause it smoke because it didn't smoke after he first installed the timing chain and gear set he told me then that the timing chain wouldn't cause the smoking and if it was smoking before it jumped time it would've been the ring's and not the timing !
I had my 1987 Chevy S10 Tahoe longbed pickup towed to the same guy who fixed the Jimmy for replacement of the Transmission Seal's , i had desided to sell the Jimmy after i got my S10 fixed ; i had burned a half tank of fuel when the guy told me it would be another week before he could get to the S10 so i topped off the tank one last time !
I started home and i got stopped at a traffic light , as the light changed green to go i looked in the driverside mirrow to see the cloud of smoke when i stepped on the gas , but this time there was no smoke and it has been over a year now and till no smoke ; i consulted with over a dozen mechanic's and they all agreeded that it was carbon deposit's builtup in the combustion chamber that was causing the ring's to stick when it got hot !
I would highly reccommend buying a can of Sea Foam and treating the fuel and engine oil with the Sea Foam before i started tearing into the engine , this stuff work's like a rebuild kit in a can and you can get the Sea Foam from any Auto Parts Store ; and WalMart has it now for $5.49 for a 16 oz can it's a little higher at the Auto Parts Stores $6.99 + tax the last time i bought it from O'Reillys Auto Parts Store !
The Engine's crankcase vent could be stopped up causing oil to be forshed into the air intake to the carb causing oil burning , i would check the air box and look for oil in the air box ; these are the inexpensive thing's to check first i would take these step's first before tearing into the engine !
Another thing you could check out if this doesn't help is the valve's , check them to see if they are within spec's ; the valve's could be off enough to cause oil burning but i would suspect the ring's are sticking like CrazySteve stated in his reply but do try the Sea Foam it has a money back Garranttee and it's been on the market since 1942 !
Any product that has been on the market this long and still carries a money back Garranttee has to be a good product , Sea Foam and Deep Creep use to be found at Marine shop's where you bought boat's and boat motor's ; that's why i never knew of it when i ran my own Small Engine Service And Repair Shop i tried every fuel additive on the Auto Parts Stores shelves looking for the best fuel treatment i could find and after over 20yrs in the Small Engine Service And Repair Industry the best i had every used before the Sea Foam was GumOut Jet Spray and GumOut Carb and Thoddle Body Cleaner !
I did use Stabil Fuel Stabilizer in my fuel i kept in gas jug's , i also used it to winterize Lawn and Garden Equipment ; but i would only pour enough fuel in the Lawn Mowers and string trimmers to finish mowing and weedeating the Lawn and ran them out of gas before storeage !
Good luck with your Quad , i hope it's only carbon buildup in the combustion chamber causing the ring's to stick ; i was about to sell my Jimmy even if i had to take a big loss because you can't drive a vehicle that smoke's here in Ga. Law Enforsement will stop you and give you a warning then if they pull you over again they will give you a citation then the third time it's a big citation and impoundment of your vehicle !.......</end quote></div>
Do what??????????????
What was the purpose of that long boring story.
White smoke isn't Gas, or every vehicle would be blowing white smoke, nvm, I'm not gonna comment...
Your rings are shot, I'll bet $50 on it and collect once you've torn it down.

thanks for the replies.I figured it might be the rings but then someone told me they had this problem because they had water in the engine. Thanks

the water would make the oil a milky color.

i am having a few problems out of my 05 kodiak 450. 1. the oil just seems to disappear i can add oil and top it off and check it 5 minutes later the dipstick will say empty.

I would think that if it lost that much oil in 5 minutes you would not be able to see the quad through the smoke. Not good.
