The Honda 400 is called a trx400EX. There is a big difference between it and the 450's. The 400 is a great quad for beginners and it responds very well to minor mods like an exhaust. It's hard to recommend a 450 for a new rider.

Depends on your riding environment. 400 for the tighter trails hands down. I know recon will agree with me there. The 450 gets hot quick and as you know likes to rev so in tighter trails it requires alot of clutch work and needs to get up to speed occasionally to get the air flowing.
The 450 is designed for race so it's higher geared and designed for higher speeds. It's best on the track or open areas where you can open her up. I go through trails on mine but, none of them are long and I can get out of them quick to cool her off. 450's are just not comfortable on the tight slow trails like the EX.
If however you plan on doing mostly open faster riding the 450's are lots of fun. I do alot of hill climbing on mine and it keeps on pulln where the 400ex would lug down.

well my friend goes trail riding alot, and he says he goes on ling trail rides, like 4hrs+ but he also says its not really slow riding. what do you think the slowest trial ride should be for a 450? and would i be worth modding a 400?

If you do long trail rides go w/ the 400 as that is what it was designed to do. This is the same reason I have a Raptor 700R over a YFZ 450!
