Default oil in airbox

I have a 06 Rancher 350. I noticed that my drain tube was black so i opened up the airbox and there was this brownish black fluide in the airbox. There wasent alot then i drained it. Then i cleaned my airfilter and on the bottom there was this black spot where the oil driped from. It took me a while to clean then when i was finsh cleanind it i put it back on. I rode for 20 minutes and i went home and looked in my airbox and it was 1/4 full of oil. I think the oil is comeing from this hose like thing thats has a little square pice sponge in it.

While i was rideing my friend saw blue smoke comeing from the pipe it was enough blue smoke to notice.

What could be causeing this to happen any help would be nice before i spend thousands of dollars on repairs.

That air filter is hideous! Replace it with a new one. What brand of oil are you using to oil it? Best to use one of the super tacky oils like Maxima FFT or UNI.

Rancher 350's pass a little oil, but it shouldn't be so much that it makes more than a residue in the bottom of the airbox. The pictures aren't that great, but I don't see all that much oil in the bottom of the box. You said it is 1/4 full???? Is your engine oil going down by the same amount????

Could be that you are passing compression from the combustion chamber (from bad rings caused by passing dirt through that crappy filter!), and it is blowing out the vent and taking oil with it out to the filter.

I would say there are three possibilities...

Is the oil level too high? Make sure you run it for a couple minutes, and let it sit for a couple minutes before checking. If the level is too high from being overfilled, or from being contaminated it could puke oil out the breather...

Has the thing been sitting at a steep angle, say loaded into a truck w/front wheels on a tool box, or put in a toyhauler at a steep angle? Oil could seep into the breather system like that...

From the looks of that filter, though, if the piston and/or rings are trashed, too much compression blowing by the rings could also drive oil out the breather....

I tilted my Rancher 420 vertically to power wash it and afterward it kind of ran crapppy (stalling when going into gear and hesitant). I check the air box and found the foam filter very oily, its new and had never checked it but thought it was odd.

I warped a rag around it and squeezed to got a lot out and now it runs fine.
