2000 AC 300 4x4 Manual General Q's
#1
Just picked up a New "To me" Cat 300... I am in the process of finding an owners manual for it but for now I'll Quiz the pros!
What is the oil Type and Specification for this perticular machine? I see 10w30 on the filler cap but nothing about Synthetic or not. I ordered an air filter and will be rebuilding the Mikuni carb on the ATV soon. What other general maintenance should I do on this Cat to ensure a good long life? The odometer says 3100 miles. Any info would be greatly appreciated

Dino oil or synthetic is fine. I use dino because it cost less and I change the oil more often... in my opinion a clean dino oil is better than a dirty synthetic.... cost too much to change synthetic very often at $30 per oil change. I change oil every 300-500 miles or when I notice that the oil is getting darker than a medium to dark tan....
Just be sure to make sure you get the correct rating "SG" I think is what you need. Check with the dealer. The "SG" will assure that the auto clutches will engage and not slip.
Well maintenance is a thing to be dealt with. The owners manual will give you a guideline but here is what I do.
I change the oil and filter often -300-500 miles
I clean my air filter at least every 100 miles.
I charge my battery after every ride.
I check my tire pressures every ride.
I check my breaks every ride - have not had to repair or replace yet.
I change the differential lub every year.
I pack my CV joints and ball joints every year.
I replace any rubber bushings at the first sign of wear.
I check the valves every year and adjust if need be.
I put marvel mystery oil, dry gas, and carb cleaner, and alcohol in my gas every time I add gas. (Seafoam is a good product and does about the same as Marvel Mystery Oil and carb cleaner does). Alcohol in your gas helps to keep your engine running cooler, dry gas - the obvious - keeps moisture under control.
In general stay on top of things and correct minor problems before they become major ones and eliminate potential problems before they start. Upkeep generally runs me $80-100 per year... I figure it is cheap compared to repairs...
