Will I need to re-jet after adding a HMF quiet core?
#1
Hey guys, I never realized really how loud my Wolverine 450 is with the HMF pipe and no quiet core. I'm a little worried about taking it up to the dunes now, because they have a 96 db limit in the park (but they will let you go up to 98db due to innaccuracy of thier sound meter).
Quad magazine did a review of the pipe, and they said it runs around 104db without the quiet core, and around 96 with it.
So now to my question...will adding the quiet core to my pipe mess with my jetting? I think it is running a little rich already, and I'm wondering if the quiet core will add more resistance to the pipe, causing it to run even more rich.
I guess its not that big of a deal, and I can mess with it when the time gets here....but I would like to get an idea ahead of time. I just ordered the core off of ebay, so I should have it in a few days.
Anybody know for sure?

i had the same problem, i put in the quiet core just for my trip to the dunes, it did seem to be a bit ritcher, but not that bad....i find that the jet hmf sends with there pipe is way to big anyways....i am going to be putting in a smaller one no matter what....btw i also have breather vents in my airbox lid so that may have helped me out as well......
what dunes you going to miwolvy?

Are you guys running the 145 main jet that HMF has listed that comes with the pipe? The reason I am asking is that I am in the process of re-jetting my wifes Wolverine and am surprised that it still appears to be running lean. I read through various forums and it seems like most are running a 140 - 145 with a slip-on. So........when I added a performance end-cap and a k&n I figured that a 137.5 would be sufficient. I am a around 750 feet and with this jet it seems to surge wide open and when I did a plug chop its basically white. I was thinking of jumping to a 142, but if a 145 is too rich with a HMF I can't see this end-cap with the stock pipe needing such a big jet. Any suggestions?
Also, what is making you determine that its rich........fouled plugs?
Also, one final question regarding the pilot jet. HMF states 2.5 turns out on the pilot. Have you done this? I had to drill out a brass plug to get to the pilot on ours, but once I did I was surprised that it was turned all the way tight..........was yours all the way in stock?
Thanks guys,

that information seems all wrong from what I know and have come across with my atv...
Hmf sent me a 140 main with my slip on....and I find that a bit rich .... I am at sea level.
I have never drilled out my brass plug or ever messed with the settings that much.
I find I get a pretty black carboned up plugs, now I will say this I am by no means an expert or even someone with much knowledge about this at all.
I am just too cheap to pay someone to get it right for me ! any help would be good... thanks

Interesting. Again, with only an end cap I wouldn't think that I need a jet this large, but the plug chop is a pretty good test that I have used over the years. And its not running correctly at high RPMs either. I am in the process of getting new jets to try, I think that I am going to bump up to a 142 next and see what happens. As far as the pilot, we have a 04 Z400 that had the little brass plug covering the pilot jet as well, not sure why some carbs have it and others don't.........

Well guys, I just learned that this quad does not adhere to the standard "plug chop" techniques that I am used to on the sport quads. In the end it makes sense to me. Instead of basing my jetting on the plug readings, I started to base it on top speed and how it ran. With the 137.5 I had lost about 5mph top end and it surged a lot. So, I started to choke it while running it wide open..........didn't seem to matter. Next I pulled the air box lid off...........ran great!!! So I knew the 137.5 was too rich. I did this 4 times only to conclude that the stock jet with the end-cap is the sweet spot. Which makes sense, I didn't expect this $30 item to perform like a full pipe! I will say though, that with the end cap and the K&N, it gained more low-end, I had to open the mixture screw 1.5 turns, and it revs much quicker, I can get it to top speed of about 53 mph pretty quick now. So it was worth the $$.............but I am sure that eventually my wife will want a "real" pipe!
