Have a 2004 Sportsman 500 and Hawkeye 300 that I need to take down from 6600 feet here in Colorado to 1775 feet.

Have done some hard core googling and search of this forum for pointers on re-jetting.... I have the factory service manual for the 500 and it doesn't have any info on how to re-jet.

Question is... how hard is it to do? Any pointers? It seems that even trying to find the right jet part number is a bit on the cryptic side?

Stock they came with either a #152.5 or a #155 depending on which model #'s you have. As for changing the jetting if you can read this and know how to use basic tools you can do it yourself. Minimal tools are needed - Take seat off, remove air box, loosen clamps holding carb to intake boot, flip carb over and take out the screws holding the float bowl on and you'll see your main jet, unscrew it and replace with new--reverse step to put together.

what does rejetting do? and when are you suppost to do it?

 

Jets are little parts inside the carburators that control the air/fuel ratio, which the needs to run properly at different altitudes. The only reason to jet is for performance or if they run too lean, it can burn up the engine. Electronic Fuel Injected bikes automatically adjust for altitude. I have a couple of big quads with the EFI, I wish my kids smaller quads had the EFI as we ride from sea level to 9000' feet.

Tbrass-I have a couple of Hawkeyes that my boys ride. They are much more sensitive to altitude changes than my other boys Yamaha. I put the midsize jet in those and it's pretty good for 1500-6500' elevations. So far the carbs have been the only issues with those bikes.

 

I'm not sure what you want for cross referencing but if its the jets, the size and type of carb is all you need.

Ref cross-ref. Looks as though Pure Polaris will not sell jets to you. So if you go to other online stores, there are several different types of Mikuni Main Jets and completely different part numbers... ie: the 500 comes with a 155, Polaris Part number 3130571 (from the service manual). At Babbits, is that KN102.221 #155 POWER JET Item: KN102221155?

Best and cheapest way out if I'm following this correctly is to buy a K&N jet kit, they come with multiple jets to suit your set-up and allows for things such as being piped,elevation and such, easy to follow directions are included. I bought mine on ebay for under 15 bucks new&delivered to the door.

 

Tbrass if you have the owners manuals from each bike the jetting is outlined in them, and if you don't have the manuals, you can download them from here;

as for the Hawkeye, you have a Mikuni bst 34
In '06 they came with 147.5 stock 0-6000ft and 142.5 6000-12000ft for use above 40*

in '07 they came with 140 stock and you removed plugs in the airbox to adjust for alitude

I do agree with MaineWheeler that the a jet kit may be the best way to get your bikes jetted exactly right
