polaris 325 trailboss

I was just wondering if there was any one that could give me some advice on this matter. This machine will start and idle great. It will run up to approx. 20 MPH but that is top speed. It should be a lot faster than that. The previous owner put on a new coil and a new belt but it didn't change anything. He got frustrated and sold it to me. It doesn't rev up in neutral so it's not a drivetrain problem but I was wondering if it could have a governer installed on it or could there be an issue with the electronic throttle control system? It can't be too complex because of the way it starts and runs . I would appreciate any input, thanks

I don't have a clue on the throttle system Polaris uses on our ATVs as Ive never had to take mine apart at the handle bars, Ive only had the carb end apart but I know on snowmobiles they have a form of TOS-throttle over-ride switch-which operates at the thumb throttle and wont allow full throttle if there is some type of obstruction or maybe debris--like i said this is just a guess but its a real good place to start from the conditions your describing -- Keep us posted

have you change the air filter?took the carb off and cleaned the jets and checked the diaphram in the carb.

Thanks for your replies guys .I was on another forum and posted the same question and had't received any replies . I don't really have a lot of time during the week but I will certainly explore these possibilities on the weekend. I was just thinking if the carb is foulled up wouldn't it spit and sputter when I tried to rev it up ? It just revs to a certain spot and that's it There's no hesitation or cough or anything? That's what's baffleling about it. Talk to you again , thanks

I think it wold have other problems if it was the carb. There's no governor that I know of, but I've never had that model. (I think) there should be 1/16 - 1/8 inch slack in the throttle cable. Check that and the ETC. Maybe you just aren't getting full throttle. From the description it sounds like it runs good, and if the problem isn't the engine it might be the rest of the drivetrain. Despite the previous owner changing the belt, you should check it, and pulleys. They would have to be REALLY worn down to slow it down that much. If the previous owner did any mods he may have screwed things up. He may have replaced the clutch springs or weights, the drive sprocket, or driven sprocket, with the wrong ones. I'm assuming it doesn't have itty-bitty tires slowing it down, but any change in tire size changes the overall gear ratio too. If everything is stock it narrows down the possibilities to just a fraction.
