'00 Scrammy 500 w/ high speed sputter/cutout
#1
My Scrammy is giving me a problem w/ high speed/load engine sputtering & cutting out (even stalled a few times). It will stall like it runs out of gas if I don't let off the throttle and let it "recover" a bit while riding at high speed or under high loads (like going up a steep sandy hill). I've opened up the gas tank cap while this happens and it seems to help a bit, but does not completely get rid of the problem if I then get back into the throttle. I've noticed gas comes out the vent tube with a full tank, giving me the impression it's not blocked up. Doesn't matter if I'm driving on smooth or rough terrain or whether on a hill or flat area.
The symptoms are just like it runs out of fuel with it sputtering and some backfire out the exhaust. I get the impression the fuel bowl runs out of fuel. Could the fuel pump be getting bad? How do I know if it's the problem or not? The valves are about 75 hours since adjustment & the fuel filter was changed the same time. It starts fine & runs fine at idle, low & mid throttle, just has problems at higher throttle over an extended period of time (like over 3 minutes).
Any ideas of what to check or to look into?

I had the same problem recently. In my case the choke (or enricher) was kinked and letting too much fuel in, I think. I replaced it and it now runs fine. Maybe your rig just needs some carb cleaner or has an air leak somewhere. Good luck.

When was the last time you cleaned your air filter</end quote></div>
About 10 hrs of riding on the filter before this last outing. Doesn't look bad, it is a K&N.

Reclean it and oil it.In dusty conditions mine will stop up in a few hours.

Well I think I found out the problem, the spark plug cap wasn't attached to the spark plug when I went to unplug it. I could see that the metal retainer that clips onto the spark plug was split. I also could see the spark plug was sooty. So, $35 later after a trip to the local Polaris dealer, I think I've got it fixed. I did remove the gas tank and checked it out, all seemed ok. I opened the valve and gas poured out just fine, blocked the vent line, the gas stopped pouring, unblocked it, started pouring out again so fuel delivery from the tank seems to be ok. Just need to get some time to take her out riding and see how it goes and see if the new spark plug cap fixes it...
