How to Hook Up A Tachometer???
#1
Hello,
I need to check the idle speed of my 2004 TRX400EX. According to the manual I need to use a tachometer, but it does not explain how to hook it up. I have a tachometer, but it was given to me a long time ago with no directions. Exactly which lead of the tachometer goes where on the ATV?
Thank you for the help!

Most of us use a tiny tach, or similar tach, to check the rpms. One wire , and it just wraps around the spark plug wire, and you can easily and quickly hook up to other motors, so you only need to buy one, for all your small motors.

I have the old, large style, hand held - test type, Tach/Dwell Meter.
I would like to know how to temporarily hook it up to test the idle rpm's.
Can someone please help me?
Thank you.

That old dwell tach probably wont show the correct rpms. Does it have a 6 cyl and 8 cyl setting, or meter face? Youll either need to divide by 6 or 8 ( actually 3 or 4, because the 400ex has a waste spark...which fires at every tdc).

hondabuster,
You are correct! There are two different scales across the meter, one is for 4 & 8 cylinders, and the other is for 6 cylinders. So, if I divide the reading to equal 2 cylinders, will that be close enough to set the idle speed?
Thanks again for the help!
