Used 450 KQ proper break-in question
#1
I went to look at a 2008 King Quad 450 at a marina. It has about 70 miles on it. The marina's owner said that since the quad was new, it has been used for pulling boats and moving other items around the marinas property. When I bought my other suzuki a few years back, the manual said that as part of the break-in procedure NOT to pull loads until the engine was broken in. One of the CV boots also has grease on both sides on the axle. The quad is selling for about 1100 less than new at a dealer. Could the first few hours of break-in pulling loads cause problems down the road?

The break-in on my Eiger was to go easy on it, varying the speed, and not running above half throttle for the first ten hours. Also NO heavy loads. I would imagine that the break-in for the KQ-450 would be the same or similar. If you think that it was not broken-in correctly and that it may have problems down the road, you may want to stay away because you should be able to find another at a similar price. At the same time, you never know if any used machine was broken-in correctly regardless of what the owner tells you. How big are the boats that it was used to move? And why is the owner selling it? If he's selling it because he needs something more powerful to move the boats, I'd walk away because it was likely abused.

Ya, the break-in procedure for my Vinson was the same as for your Eiger. It always concerns me buying used...this marina had some big boats ( his main business was selling boats ).
I also see a lot of atv dealers selling off their 2008 demos and rentals this time of year because the 2009s are coming in.....some good deals on rentals with low mileage, but you don't know if its had the #$@# driven out of it or not......its amazing how invincible or fast some people think a quad is when they don't own it.
I'm looking for a 2nd ATV for my wife and older kids. I originally started out looking at used Eigers and then looked at the new KQ 400, its supposed to be just like the Eiger but different plastic, front brakes and a few other small things. Everything I have read about the Eiger has been positive...its supposed to be a great atv. I'm happy with Suzuki....so I'd like to stick with them....my Vinson has been great.
