Default 04 Kodiak 400, Oil Fill and Diff Fill Quantities...

Anyone have one and know the specs? What weight of front and rear diff fluid would you recommend? I am going to be picking one up tommorrow evening and just wanted to pic a few things up ahead of time. Also anyone know anything to look out for with these? any problems? any praises? Thanks in advance. Rob.

If you buy the oil from the dealer he will be able to tell you how much you need. I have an 05 450. I can tell you what my manual says. When you fill the rear diff my book tells me to fill it to the bottom of the fill hole. When filling the front diff it is different. Because of the way the hole is angled you must put in only the right amount. If you overfill it you will have oil coming out the vent tube. Check into getting a Haynes manual for it. It is a lot cheaper than a factory book and should have the info you want.

my differentials on my 99 Big Bear have SAE 80w90 stamped on the cases. you fill them to just below the bottom of the threads on the check/fill plug. if your changing the engine oil, get YamaLube 10w30 or 10w40. i think most Yam ATVs hold 3.75 quarts or around that number. id go 3.5 then start it and let it warm up and check for leaks, then top it off after it sits about 10 minutes.

there is the link to the Haynes service manuals. i ordered mine yesterday for 20 bucks. i suggest ordering one. they are based on a complete teardown and rebuild, just like the automotive manuals they publish as well.

On my 450 you can't fill the front one to the top. The fill hole is angled up. In order to fill it to the top the diff gets overfilled. When it warms up the oil is pushed up the vent tube and spills out onto the exhaust pipe.
