atv for twelve year old
#1
Hey everyone I am going to get my son a atv he is 90 pounds and he's 12. He has rode his friends grizzly 350 2wd before he rode that pretty hard. So I don't know if I should get him a wolverine 350 or a recon or anything 250 through 350cc. Any suggestions. I just don't want him to get hurt.

My kids grew up riding the 250's, both the Recon and the 250EX's. Nice thing about the EX, is it is bascially a Recon in sport plastic, and a hefty 50 pounds lighter!! Goog intermediate machines.

It depends, does it really have to be a utility quad because if not there is choices like the raptor 250 that are great beginner quads</end quote></div>
Good suggestion, the Raptor, if they can learn a clutch. Nice, very light machine!
90 pounds is on the light side for these machines. Is he likely to be growing more in the near future.

Yes reconranger he should be growing very soon. Yes I do like the raptor 250 and the recon. I do worry about having problems with the raptors chain and ground clearance but other than that I like it. So how long do you think the raptor will fit him if I get him that? So do you think the wolverine 350 is too big for him?

No it does not have to be a utility quad. Yeah I agree with you 100% on the raptor 250. I just don't want chain drive and ground clearance to be an issue. Will the raptor 250 fit him long? Do you recomend him going up any hills on it?

When I am out camping, the dads spend more time riding the kids Raptors than the kids do....that should tell you something! As for ground clearance, only you know your local riding conditions and what is necessary. You could certainly get some more ground cleance on the Raptor with a wise choice of tires. The Raptor should be able to climb anything, but it isn't going to be a mud machine or anything like that.
And again, skip the Recon in favor of the 250EX! They are the similar machines, and the EX is lighter...which he will appreciate.

My son first rode a Recon and learned well on that. He started when he was about 12 or 13. First, it was with the 17 year old that knew how to ride on the back. Then, he rode alone with me following on another quad. He's ridden a Kawasaki Lakota 300 without a problem and he was 14 at the time. It all comes down to size, maturity, and experience for me.

A nice used 300ex is a great trail quad for a kid that size, light, easy to drive, and quick on the tight twisty trails, plus electric start and reverse. Now, where to find a good used one??? ( cough, cough - check my signature, its for sale-cough cough)
