05 800 Sportsman - Engine Cuts Out - *Update*
#1
Hello,
As you can tell I am new here... I bought my Dads 2005 Polaris 800 from him a while ago...
The bike has about 3000km on it so far.
Anyways... Here's my issue and I am hoping some of you more experienced Polaris owners may have some direction.
Oer the last few weeks the bike seems to have developed a bog/miss in the lower end of the throttle... It will sputter and miss, almost cough and then picks right back up...
But recently... I'll be cruising along at like 4000RPM and the engine will just die..! I can coast a little ways and then all of a sudden it kicks back in... A short time later the engine will die again... And then all of a sudden kick in!
It hasn't left me stranded yet but I fear it may one day soon, and with a Grizzly Bear hunt coming up I need the bike working 100%
What could be the problem?
Thanks in Advance.
Carl

Thanks RolliePollie,
The information center keeps on ticking when it does this... I am not having any electrical problems that I know of... I am thinking maybe something with the fuel injection...
Also there is a leak where the exhaust meets the manifold... Could this make a difference?

Yes the exhaust leak could cause it also set the slack in the throtttle cable the adjustment is 4" from the thumb throttle, adjust so there is 1/8 inch of slack at the thumb throttle.

fix the exhaust leak and make sure the etc is set correctly. if it was shutting off i would say fuel pump maybe but if its still runing. also check to make sure their isnt any dirty air filter and no air leaks. also check to make sure there is at least 12.5 volts being put out as it needs this constant voltage to keep it running correctly or it will start having running issues.

Okay... I've now got the bike apart and have the Exhaust problem licked... However after taking off all of the body panels etc... I see there is quite a bit of oil/fuel residue all over the top of the engine where the plugs/injectors are.

What could this be from....? Could it be causing my stumbling missing issue?
Also... I've been doing lots of reading on this forum about the fuel pump issue on these bikes. I think this maybe contributing to my problem. When they bike does it's shut down thing it's always been running for a good 1/2hr - 45 mins when it starts...
With the replacment NAPA fuel pump how involved of a job is it to change...? Polaris obviously steers you away from this...
Also, Are there any replacement injectors that work, that aren't the $150 each from Polaris???? I am thinking my flat spot in the throttle on the low end is related to injector issues.
Thanks For All Your Help!

I just wanted to thank everyone here... Especially those who took the time to reply. I dug through this forum and found there were others with similar problems... So I replaced the fuel pump (NAPA Part - Saved me over $500!!!!) Thank You
And while I had the bike apart, I installed a new rear muffler on the left side (broke old one), and also fixed the exhaust gasket at the head (leaking bad).
These repairs made a huge difference in how the bike was running and through the advice on here saved myself major money instead of dealing through Polaris.
I never got a Grizzly Bear but I did manage to get an Elk!
Thanks Again - This place is great!
