Whats wrong with the stock Raptor pipe?
#1
Does anybody know what exactly is better about the aftermarket pipes vs the stocker with the spark arrestor removed? I'm sure the aftermarket are clearly better but I am wondering what qualities do they have that makes them better. Isn't the stock pipe also a straight through design just like most of the aftermarket?
Does anybody know what pipe properties contribute to a pipe having say a better lowend or topend? Is it the length of the silencer itself or the diameter and amount of packing? I can't imagine that the stock pipe is too awefully restrictive (of course with the spark arrestor removed) since I can stand 10-15 feet behind and feel the blasts of exhaust hit me while my bike is running. I'm sure it's heavier than any aftermarket and doesn't look as good but I am talking pure functionality here more than they way it looks or if it's a few pounds heavier.
Also I was wondering the same about the head-pipe? I can understand it being able to flow more exhaust with less back-pressure with a larger diameter than stock, but (correct me if I'm wrong) some aftermarket like the FMF don't appear to be much if any larger than stock. Is this a situation of the stock headpipe being adequate unless you do major engine mods that require the much larger amount of flow?
With all of this being said, I do plan on getting an aftermarket pipe but if there are no REAL differences between them I may as well just go for the one that I think looks the coolest and if the stock headpipe is adequate I will probably just get a slip-on until I go into the engine.
Thanks to any that can enlighten me

Uhhh, I think you answered your own question.
I can personally say, however, that the Big Gun exhaust made a BIG difference in low and mid range pull. I guess it's kind of like the difference between a river flowing across a rocky stream bottom compared to flowing through a concrete-lined channel. It's just set up better to flow. But then again, maybe I've been drinking too much rootbeer and I don't know what I'm talking about.

There is no pipe made that you can install on a stock 4-stroke that will make unreal power. The stock pipe, from what i hear, is not a terriable design. Unless you are planning further mods, i would recommend a slip on.The stock headpipe is a good bit smaller that most aftermarket systems, The larger aftermarket systems will help accomidate the extra air flow that serious mods will require. I have the BG system and am very happy with it.

My brother and I have the full Big Gun on our Raptors and couldn't be more happy. I raced my friend up Sand Mtn w/ his core out of his stock Raptor and I was slowly pulling away the whole way up for about a five quad lenth.

No2strokebs, I would have agreed with you up untill I got a pipe put on the raptor. Honestly the gain is a substantial amount if you get a chance ride a stock one and then a piped raptor. I have raced mx bikes for years and have had plenty of mods pipes and motors and never has there been this big of change in power/performance.

Okay buggy lets get one thing straight. Like a movie I once saw calling me by Mr. is like putting an elevator in an out-house, just ain't gonna work and Ssndgod is just a name, don't worship it! I run 145 & 150 jets, cut flaps out of air-intake, drilled airbox, needle in number 4 position. Gearing is a factor and if you are running paddles you're killing yourself. Sand is to wet and heavy!!!!!!!!! I beat a Ron woods Ds twice, I don't care about the hill. It does tell how my quad is pulling. I'd rather rally on a mx sand track we're skill is involved.
