Default Trail Boss Lighting Problems

I just bought a 86 Trail Boss 250 2x4 and within 5 Min's of getting it off the truck and taking it for a ride the headlight and taillight wet out I called a local shop and dropped it off. The guy at the shop figures it was a regulator that went out and burnt out the bulbs. So im Having him replace the regulator and bulbs as well as rebuild the starter (it pull starts easy but since its there why not) I have to take the quad to a country music fest and do security and if this happens there im screwed...
so i have a few questions
1) what caused the regulator to go out? ad can i prevent it?
2)Could using the HighBeem have contributed? I had just went from low to high about 30 seconds before it happened
3) dose the regulator affect the battery charging?
4) if it happens again im thinking about just hooking up a pair of fog lights as a quick fix. anyone ever tried this?
5 any other quick fixes you can think of? I need headlight(s) for this job
Thanks in advance

i would not think you will have any problem,it was an electronic part that went bad.take a look at wiring, make sure you have no wires that have insulation off (SHORT TO GROUND).that could pop a regulator....you could hook up extra lighting but you would have to have a seperate power source for it to be a back-up.....

Any injector oil rated TCW3 is suitable, just dont mix different brands. Wally Worlds injector oil just as good as anyones. Not necessary to use high dollar synthetic premix oil.

I know on our Trailblazer that when the battery was going bad it blew out the lights. It would still run the starter so I didnt think it was bad but it was. Replaced battery, new lights and everything has worked flawlessly.
