Get a Can-Am Outlander or Renegade. The Outlander you can get with a 400cc single cylinder, or 500cc EFI twin cylinder (and 600 and 800 with the same stuff as the 500). You can get the Renegade with a 500 or 800.

The Renegade is about 100 lbs less, and is sportier, but has the same 4wd system as the outlander.

Also, you can get the outlander with a MAX (Long wheel base for two ppl) and or an XT package (winch, bumpers, a few other doo-dads).

Can-Am also has the awesome 3 year warranty.

I say get a 400 Outlander XT and your Dad can get the Outlander 600 XT (or 800 if he really wants it like mine did LOL).

Can-Ams are a little bit pricier than Yamaha's and Honda's (at least some of them are) but you get what you pay for. Can-Ams typically make the most power in their engine class (go to a dealer and look at the dyno charts in the brochure).

You should take a look at the Sportsman 500. It's been the single most popular ATV in the world for several years. And for good reason. Arctic Cats and Kawasakis are supposed to be good too. Honda 500s have less power than most 400s, so if you get a Honda you might want a 680 instead.

can-ams are really fast and fun. i know alot of people with them and they have had problems with them, but we go muddin' alot too. the 09 polaris 550 is supposed to have alot of improvements this year, but i don't know anybody that has one yet. i am an arctic cat fan myself.

Figure out what engines size ya want then go to the dealers and test drive them all. You will know which one suits you best. All the manufacturers have their pros and cons. People can argue all day about who is the best. Once you ride them you will get a good idea of what you like. From what i have seen you really won't be dissapointed with any of the new atvs.
