So I just bought a used quad and its pretty sweet. First quad ever, a 2003 400ex. So I need a new chain, there is too much play between the links. I hear that you should replace the sprocket and the chain since they wear together, but I want to post my sprocket and see what you guys will say; replace or not.

Replace both and the front sprocket too...start out with everything fresh!

 

any particular brands? Ones I should stay away from?

 

Renthall is a good choice, although more expensive than other brands.. Steel lasts longer than aluminum.

well I ordered the wrong chain links size. does anyone know the link length of the 2003 400ex?

Also will changing the sprocket sizes mean I need a different size chain?

for front or rear sprockets :

add two links for every two teeth added;

subtract two links for every two teeth subtracted
