The only way that I can get my DS650 to start up before I ride it is to give it full choke and full throttle. The carb leaks out of the bottom a bit, so I shut the gas off. Sometimes it leaks, sometimes it don't. Anyways that's the only way it will start, once started it runs like a champ. After you shut it off for a while it will still start great. It's just the first time you start it each day. Does this sound like a valve problem? Like their getting tighter? Let me know if you've had this problem. Thanks.

I just ordered another carb for it, maybe this will fix it.

 

What kind of carb did you order, and what did it cost?

 

I just ordered a stock carb off of ebay, it was used. There was one on there yesterday that sold for around $100, I bought one today for $51 that included the throttle cable.

 

Sounds like you need a valve adjustment to me.

Classic symptom. If it starts when warm but, hard to start when it is cold your valve clearance is off. Get them adjusted or adjust them yourself and it will turn over just fine.

 

I'm going to adjust the valves tomorrow when I get off of work. The only problem that I have is I was curious of where you can purchase shims for the valves at. Can you pick them up at a part store or do you have to order them through bombardier. I know that they are a 29mm, but don't know if I will need shims or not. Guess I check the clearance tomorrow and then figure out where to buy shims before I tear it all down.

 

Check your clearances then mic the shims. You may be able to use a few that you already have by moving them around.

If they are too large, you can thin them up with a sharpening stone. Otherwise, call your dealer they can get you what you need. I hear they are the same as some Kawi (if I remember right?)

I know the clearance is supposed to be .004-.006, my intake was so tight that I couldn't put a .0015 gauge in there. The exhaust on the other hand was .008 and the other was .009. I swapped the exhaust shims for the intake and then the new exhaust was .005 and the other .006. The intake was still too tight like before. I took the intake shims out and sanded on them with sand paper by hand for prob 35-40 minutes. Put them back in and still couldn't slide a .0015 feeler gauge in there but was able to spin the cam freely. I'm going to have the parts store mic them tomorrow and see if they have any that are around .005 thinner. That should give me the right clearance.
