Default Honda 450 es speedometer stop working

My weekend ride ended at around 5:30 this morning when the primary clutch seal took a dump on my Harley. Left oil all over my rear tire while running down interstate. So much for running Yellowstone, the Big Horns and Black Hills with the boys.... I had to turn back

About your 450...

The system will shut down when the ecu sees a problem in the system. It is pre 2002 so no diagnostic mode is on this unit
Since the shifting has shut down. it is most likely the speed sensor. If you can get the display to show speed long enough, take the unit shortly up to the rev limiter in 3rd gear and let off. Watch the speedo for glitches. If the speed sensor is bad, the speedo will wierd out and the unit stops shifting.
There is some tests for the speed sensor at the connector, check connector for moisture, loose connections system voltage and pulse voltage when rotating the wheels. I seldom use them. I have had speed sensors pass this bench test, then when run in 3rd like described before, fail the speed sensor.
Check the shift control motor. Remove it and apply voltage both directions. If the shift motor fails the shift system will shut down and nothing displayed in the meter.
One of the wires from the angle sensor feeds power to the meter's display. I believe it powers the cpu chip in the meter. A bad angle sensor will shut down the shift system and cause no mph to be displayed on the meter. I would wory about this last after checking the shift motor and speed sensor

I hope this helps
