Building jumps for my Z400
#1
Now, obviously i know that beginners should start small and i agree. I just starting jumping my 2006 Z400 and i absolutely love it. i havent wrecked yet (thank god) but started off doing smaller table tops. im building my own jumps so i control how big to make them. I have been jumping for a couple weeks and am comfortable on every double i have built so far up to about 35-45 feet.
So, what is considered big and what should i aim for when building a double? what size is a normal track jump? I would like to be on pace to be able to ride a track comfortably asap.
Thank you to all!!

It really varies from track to track. Like I have said in the past it is best to go visit some different tracks and see what they have. I have seen table tops with about a 10-15 ft approach and 90 ft long. You don't want to get good at just one size, keep what you have and add larger and different ones so you know what your quad is capable of in a specific gear at a specific rpm because they all vary. 35-45 foot double is a good size double, I have seen smaller ones that are right after corner that a person has trouble making. My best advice is go to a track, they most all have practice most days of the week and ride. You'll see all the differences.

Well the biggest jump on any pro racing circuit is around 100-feet..... the biggest jump for years was the downhill triple at Broome-Tioga and that was just over 110-feet and only the top 2-3 pros on the planet were doing it every lap..... and that was on an MX bike....
Most ATV big jumps are around the 100-foot mark but they are usually tabletops or terrain triples..... 30-40 feet is a nice double, but they can get as big as 50-60 feet at their sickest but there are few people who can and will make all those big leaps even during a pro event.....

By "terrain" triple I mean that it is built into natural terrain.... generally an "uphill" or "downhill" leap that is progressive. Or in some cases and "up-and-over" a big natural hill. As opposed to a stadium triple like in Supercross that is totally man made.....you can come up a little short on most natural terrain jumps and tabletops and not get too hurt, but you don't want to come up short on a stadium triple..... that gets very ugly....
In some cases yes the ATVs and MX bikes use the same track.... this is something that has really only happened in the last few years as the ATVs are finally good enough to handle such jumps.... the technology has finally drawn closer to the bikes....
In fact it escapes me which track it was (I wanna say Glen Helen) but a couple years ago John Natalie came within a fraction of a second to Rickey Carmichael's practice lap times during a national where the ATVs used the same track for their national. That is something that was just not possible 5-10 years ago.
Yeah if I were you, see if you can find a local MX track to get some time on.... It will give you a great riding lesson as well a better idea of what you need to build at your house to keep yourself having fun and getting better.....
