Painting my Frame
#1
I'm going to paint my banshee frame soon and I was thinking about just using cheap spray paint. I know I should powdercoat it but I'm using the money I save for Pipes, just wondering if anybody has had a terrible, terrible chipping problem using spray paint, Thanks.

Did you do a search on this subject? There was a detailed discussion on this a few months ago. The message Ai got from the discussion was that nothing beats powder coating and the second best was industrial/ 2 part epoxy type coatings.

Spray paint is good for about the first 3 rides. What I do is use a single stage urethane automotive paint. It is the tuffest thing other than powder coating. YOu can buy a pint for around $55. A paint shop might even paint for you, if you know some one in the autobody business.

I used spray paint on my bumper and footboards, it faded considerably after the 2-3rd ride, but it did coat them and there is no rust on them yet (I put it on as a rust preventative) I would only suggest using spray-paint if you ABSOLUTLY have to, and make sure that you paint it right if you do (i would reccomment you sandblast it, and use a min. 5 primer coats, 2 coats paint, and keep it in the warmest enviroment available to you whilst you watch the paint dry

if your going to spray paint it i suggest using PJ1 frame paint its about six dollars a can but its better than most spray paint.i painted my last bike with it. it only wore off in the high wear places like above the footpegs and so on.it never chipped.im about to send my250r frame away to get powdercoated.which is what i suggest u to do

I painted my frame about a year and a half ago.
My method was pretty easy. I am lucky enough to have a craftsman air compressor. So I spent another $40 and bought the sand blasting kit for it. and ~$5 for a bag of sand.
It took all of an hour to totally clean the frame..rinse it..and dry it.
For paint, I went to the paint store and bought automotive base coat. Which they will put into a spray can for you at a slight extra cost. It worked like a charm and held up great. It still looks good after a year and a half. One can of clear over the top and I was done... Even the area where your legs/boots rub the frame held up.
take your time and good luck.

Don't waste all of the time and effort to strip the frame down, and spray it with cheap spray paint. At least use a good grade of frame paint (PJ-1 or VHT ) or automotive catylized acrylic enamel or even better catylized urethane paint. The job will look better and last longer as well.

I just got my frame, swingarm, lower A-arms, footpegs, axle carrier and chain guard back from being all sandblasted and powder coated purple and yellow. It all cost me $240. Is this price about right my friend is now thinking about getting his warrior done and he was wondering? (upper A-arms chromed that was extra)
