Looking for a new quad.. is this a Good Deal?
#1
Hello, New to the ATV connection forums but have always been an ATV guy. Looks like a good forum. Anyway, My buddies neighbor has a 2002 Yamaha Raptor 660R which looks in really good shape. He says it has about 220 Hours on it and he has all the maintenance records and everything. It is mostly stock besides the handlebars and tires... seems to be in real good shape. Only things wrong with it is the back shocks need to be recharged and the tires are kind of weak. Everything else seems great. Stock clutch. I can get it for probably between 2000-2300.. Good deal?
Is the raptor 660R a reliable and dependable quad? As I don't want to be pumping money into it all the time. Long lasting?
I mostly do trail riding through mild- decently rough (Usually go around the extreme rocks if I can... Except in the 08 Outlander 800R XT ) rocky area with frequent small fallen tree's and some little streams. (I'm not worried about uphill as I never have a problem on my buddies old 97 Polaris Trail Boss 250) Will it be great for this?
Any other input would be great. Thanks for the help!!

The first year (01 I think?), had transmission problems. After that, they cut the gears differently and that solved the problem.
I don't like the 660 much. Several of my friends bought them, but got rid of them pretty quick! They are narrow, the engine is tall and the radiator is up high in the frame, so they have a to high center of gravity. This makes them a little bit tippsy. I personally never liked the ergonomics either.

It was the 01 with tranny problems. I drove one in S Cal and it seemed fine to me. I now live in CT though... any word on how it performs in the trail riding I described?

I've never ridden any raptor, be it 660 or 700, but from what I've heard the 700 is a great all around atv that does great on trails. I would only imagine that the same thing goes for the 660. I've read a bunch of articles, read a lot of reviews, and heard a lot about this quad from people. Yes, I'm also in the market for a sport quad. From what I've heard, they are narrow and tall and tend to be tipsy (just like the person above me stated). Although, it's hard to pass up such good deals that you come across on these quads. they have a ton of aftermarket options and if the tall and narrow thing is that big of a deal, I'm sure you can lower it and make it a little wider (i've seen it done). So if you have the money, I wouldn't stress over it too much. Also, on my full-time 4-wheel drive rancher, I have brand new tires on it and can still somewhat powerslide around a corner without tipping it. Then again, it's a different quad. Again, I've never ridden one but how bad can they be? I mean, people still have them.

Actually, atv fan, they aren't even close. They made many improvements since 02. Reconranger is right in that the 660 has a high center of gravity, is narrow and tipsy. I had an 02 LE Raptor and couldn't get rid of it fast enough. It required a lot of body english to keep it upright. I did like the low end power, though. On the trail, you can blip right over rocks and ruts. You can also ride wheelies for miles. Harv, if you think you like it, ride it and see for yourself. Maybe it works for you, but I sure didn't like it. It is a good reliable atv with plenty of power and fun on the trail. Most of them around here have larger tire kits for more ground clearance....something to consider if you ride trails and need new tires.
