Default 2002 Yamaha Raptor 660R

Hello, New to the ATV connection forums but have always been an ATV guy. Looks like a good forum. Anyway, My buddies neighbor has a 2002 Yamaha Raptor 660R which looks in really good shape. He says it has about 220 Hours on it and he has all the maintenance records and everything. It is mostly stock besides the handlebars and tires... seems to be in real good shape. Only things wrong with it is the back shocks need to be recharged and the tires are kind of weak. Everything else seems great. Stock clutch. I can get it for probably between 2000-2300.. Good deal?

Is the raptor 660R a reliable and dependable quad? As I don't want to be pumping money into it all the time. Long lasting?

I mostly do trail riding through mild- decently rough (Usually go around the extreme rocks if I can... Except in the 08 Outlander 800R XT ) rocky area with frequent small fallen tree's and some little streams. (I'm not worried about uphill as I never have a problem on my buddies old 97 Polaris Trail Boss 250) Will it be great for this?

Any other input would be great. Thanks for the help!!

Some of those early year raptors had tranny problems. Don't know for sure but I think it's the '01,'02s. Someone else will surely chime in and correct me if i'm wrong or confirm it.

I didn't know they made a quad that you didn't have to dump money into!!

That sounds like a pretty good deal. The '01's were the only 660's that had tranny issues. They are just as reliable as any other quad out there. There are a lot of 660's out there still going strong, so they seem to hold up pretty good.

I think they are good trail machines. Electric start, reverse, and plenty of power to do whatever you want. It's not going to like the rocks very much, but no sport bike will.

Ya, as far as I know, the raptor was meant to be the ultimate trail quad and the 700r more so. I mean, the honda 400ex is probably the ultimate, but the raptor delivers way more power. As long as you're not going over any boulders or huge logs, you should be fine. If that were the case, I'd reccommend a utility. I myself am thinking about getting a 660r, but I'm not sure about the negatives everyone brings up such as the tippyness, tall, and narrow. I don't know a lot of people personally that actually have a raptor so all I have to go on is what people on the internet tell me and sometimes, a lot of people just get on the bandwagon and copy what everyone else says so getting good info is hard sometimes. Anyways, from the articles and reviews I've read, the raptor is a great trail quad.

sounds like a good deal to me, seeing that most 660's that I come across are more around $3000-3500. I don't want to tell you to get it because ultimately it's your decision and it depends on how you feel about it, but (like someone told me) if the negatives about it concern you then you can always put a little bit of money into it and make it more suitable towards you. Like the tippyness, you can get longer a-arms and swingarm. Honestly, if it were that big of a deal, then nobody would have them.

One reason I got rid of my 01 Raptor 660 was I was putting money into it like every other week. It was getting bad. I have no clue why. But I never had tranny problems. But yes, very good deal
