I'm trying to locate the frame VIN number on my 96 SP ,the one under the seat has been wore down from what looks like where someone routed a power wire for something and the seat rubbed the wire causing the VIN to wear down.I checked the frame rail behind the left front wheel but appears the factory never stamped it there on that year unlike my 02,is there another location it might be stamped,I checked everywhere I knew to look.Thanks

 

On a 98 VIN should be on lower left of the frame tube. That is as far back as polaris manuals go on their site.

 

my 96 sportsman 500 has it on the right side on the frame near the top but under the fender. It's a short vin, I think only the 96's were like this.

 

Hi that's a big help, can you see the number without removing the plastic? Is it near the shifter on the frame? I looked for over a hour after pressure washing it and had no luck,I'm not sure what the rubbed number is under the seat.I bought the sp from a old guy a while back for parts and decided to fix it which I did, I could not locate the number the day I bought it and at the time he just gave me a receipt stating non running atv ect.. Now that it's running I need to get some documents "bill of sale ect" before I spend more money in it.I'm 100% positive it is a 96 due to the stamps on the engine pad, tranny decals and plastic dates.

 

yep I can see it w/o removing anything. Mine shows 7 numbers with a * on each side (*1234567*) the lower part of the gas tank it directly behind mine

 

I'll say you have been a big help, my local Polaris dealership did not even know the location on the pre98 models.I'll take a look in that area near the tank in the morning.Thanks again,Charles

 

I just walked out to take a look,my flashlight was a bit dim.I did not see it looking in the area on the frame between the right tire and fender near the bottom area of the tank.There is a frame rail the shifter mounts to,is that the one you are referring? I do not see any grind marks any where so I know it's there.I'll try again in the morning,it may be under the paint,looks like someone has touched it up here and there in the past where the paint was popping

That's where it is on my 99--on the right. mine is stamped on the TOP of the square tube framing though pointing up towards the gas tank, NOT on the side facing out towards the tire.

 

Mine is on the sq tubing with the numbers facing the back of the passenger front tire. I'd say to use a about location it's right at 11 o'clock if your looking at the pass front tire. I can probably take a pic of it later if you need one.
