2003 Honda Trx300 Electrical Problem
#1
I've been trying to locate the problem of my ATV but I just can't seem to get it. The ATV neutral light will not come on. The head light will but not the reverse or the neutral light. I put a new ignition coil and new spark plug so it has sparks, I put a new starter solenoid, a new battery, and wires from a Honda Fourtrax the ATV was the same as mine but just called a different name. The only thing different about these wires is that there is a green and a brown wire and I have no idea what that leads to. I made sure all the wires were snug and fit when I installed those wires. I also made sure the battery cables were connected and put on right. I checked my fuses and they are perfect. I bypassed the starter solenoid and it turns but it won't run. The battery is fully charged. I tried push starting it, it wants to run but it didn't stay on. I don't know what I should do I've been trying to locate this problem for a month. Please I'm very desperate for answers. Before I put all these parts in the ATV was running fine but until I pulled out of garage in reverse and I switched it back into gear and everything just shut off. So I checked my fuses and one of them were blown and I replaced them but it still wouldn't start up to this day like I said above, I put a bunch of new things on but still, absolutely nothing. When I push the start button there is no sound whatsoever it seems like the bike is dead.

The most common cause of an electrically "dead" 300 is the red or pink wire in/near that black box on the headstock having broken. These wires move as you turn the steering and eventually break. However, fitting wires from a different bike may cause problems, even different years of 300 have incompatible components. For instance the neutral light wire worked the opposite way round on early machines to later ones, i.e on one, the neutral wire had to be live at the CDI in neutral. On the other it was live in all gears except neutral.

Well the wires seem to fit and they fit snug I have the original wires should I just put those original wires back on?
But you would have to explain those other wires to me I have no idea how to do electrical work on a ATV

I put back the original wires and the neutral light came on but its still not turning over I make sure the ATV is in neutral and I press the start button but it still doesn't do anything no noises or anything

Starting with the small wires to the solenoid, put a test lamp across them and, ignition on, in neutral, press the start button, if you get power here you must have a faulty solenoid. Depending on design, you may have one lead positive all the time and the start switch tuning negative on and off, or the other way round, but if you don't have one wire connected to the battery, with ignition on, you have a fault in that wire, if you don't get a circuit through the other wire when the start button is pressed, you have a fault in that wire or the button, or the wires to the button.

Well the solenoid has to be good its brand new but when I put a test meter on the battery and the solenoid what should the results come up to? Like what is the number if the results taht I need to aim for? I'm very sorry if I can't word it right haha I'm young and I'm learning to work on a ATV by myself

12 volts on the voltmeter scale, but I have found over the years that having 12v to something doesn't mean having power to it (amps) as well, so test lamps are best for this type of work.

I also have another question my ATV is smoking alot and I was told that I need to rebuild the top end all I know is that the piston is a stock size piston what is the size piston that I need to look for without opening the top end up? Or what is the stock piston size for a 2003 Honda 300Ex?
