I changed out the starter on my 99 scrambler 400. Should be about the same. Take the 8 bolts off the starter cover. There isn't a gasket between it and the engine block. You should buy some sealant when you put it back together though.
Inside there will be 2 bolts that holds the starter and underneath there will be two additional bolts. Four bolts total.
It gets real close quarters for the underneath bolts, but with patience and determination you should be able to get them off and back on. There is another way but involves taking the clutch out and I didn't want to mess with that.
Success to you

I heard the scrambler is a little bit different. Does anybody know? I was wondering also is it easier to tip the atv on its side proped up to work on it? Do you go at it from the top for any bolts? Thanks alot for all your help..
