Hi All,

I do not have the owners manual for my atv and am wondering what the manual reads for Oil capacity on a 2004 sportsman 500. I have heard 2 quarts and have also heard just under 2 quarts. I changed it yesterday and put about a quart and a half in and it seems to be full, even after running it for a few minutes. Any help would be great. Thanks

 

From my Cylmers service manual.

1.89 Liters or 2 U.S quarts.

You may of gotten away with less if you only draind your oil tank and not your engine crankcase as well.

Once I drain my oil tank I start the motor for 20 seconds and a additional cup of oil shoots out the oil tank drain hole.

 

There have been several discussions about the same thing, You can do a search on the topic. I just did mine but can't remember the exact amount. There is a proceedure to it though, You should drain the oil tank and the bottom end of the engine, You'll get about another pint out the the crankcase. I always change the filter. You'll find a lot of talk about bleeding a line. There is a screen in there and when you pull the screen out I guess you need to ensure it has a vacuum to prime the pump. I've yet to hear about anyone with crud in the screen
I don't mess with it. I just change the oil and filter.

Yes your suppose to drain the motor of engine as well and disconnect a oil line to the oil tank and check the little screen. Then you have to do the bleeding proceedure.

I did it once and the screen was supper clean. Now I just do it my Lazy way as posted above.

 

You should change both the tank and crank case.
I would drop the crankcase drain plug like you would on a car before I would run the engine to eject the remaining oil. I would never run my car on a cup of oil.
The drian plug is a little tricky getting back up in there but if you reach in from the side and from down below you'll get it.
About the third oil change you'll do it in about 15 minutes. My first go around took awhile for all the fishing around to get the plug back into the bottom of the engine.
Now it only takes a few minutes.
Always drain the tank, pull the crankcase drain plug and change the filter.
I pass on the screen change but many on here will say different.
I use Polaris oil. You'll get a big discussion on that too.

2 qts is when everything is completely empty i think your'll find.

 

Being that I only changed the oil tank oil. Does the old crankcase oil then mix with the new oil? I am assuming that this will be fine until the next oil change right?

ditto... i never pulled the crank case.....

I don't think it's going to hurt anything.
Maybe think about changing it again a little sooner then you normally would.
I change my oil about once a year. Synthetic oil holds up well.
