What to use for silencer packing?

I was wondering if anybody has ever tried to use insulation as silencer packing? If so what kind? Any other ideas for packing? Thanks

For all silencer packing costs (like $10). Why mess around with anything else???

You can use steel wool but it will be louder than with regular packing material. Like Nsayne said you're better off spending $10 on the real stuff.
