Default problems with carb

i have two problems with my carburetor that i need to address. 1. i have to turn off the fuel valve every time i shut the quad off or all of me fuel will slowly drip out of the carburetor. 2. the quad wont start without priming it with starter fluid. any ideas on how to fix these?

spark plug. the float should be level when the carb is upside down.(carb should be off). how many miles on this bike and did you do a compression test. how does it run when its running. just a few ideas

ok ill check the plug and carb settings. i have no idea on the mileage. its an 86 trailboss 250. id like to get a carburetor rebild kit eventually. when its running it sounds good. a little sluggish if i let it idle a while and then rev it but other than that its pretty good.

sounds like your float is sticking. I just went through the exact same syptoms with my 00 magnum. take the carb off, flip it upside down and take off the bowl. you will see the plastic float, it should move freely. if not remove it and clean it up.

how did the needle look when you had it apart. doesnt take alot of wear to make them leak fuel by.

i noticed that when held upsidedown, the float was slightly upward. i pushed it down to level and now the quad will start without starter fluid. i still have the problem with having to turn the fuel valve off but i figure u can put up with it until i get a rebuild kit
