Starter voltage on Raptor 660
#1
I have been doing some trobleshoot on my 01 raptor 660 to get it running again. Its been dead for awhile now. I was checking the voltage thats apply to the started when i try to start it and its reads about 8.5 volts. does anyone know if that is normal or should it be around 12 volts? i was looking at the service manuel and says nothing about voltage.

JUST LIKE A CAR THE BATTERY SITTING WITH NO LOAD SHOULD BE ABOVE 12 VOLTS 12.5 13 IS GOOD IF 12 AND BELOW CHARGE IT. WHEN CRANKING ENGINE VOLTAGE SHOULDNT DROP BELOW9.5 IF IT DOES BATTERY IS BAD AFTER STARTING CHARGING COIL SHOULD BE AROUND 13.5 WHEN REVVING

I'll check all the wire's to make sure they all have a good connection. As for the battery it measure's 12 volts. Can it be a bad starter relay?</end quote></div>
Measure the volts at the battery during starting. It will probably be the same as at the starter. You could also try to turn the lights on and measure the voltages at the battery and see if the lights lower the voltage. If it does, you could still have a loose connection but more than likely the battery is bad. Make sure you check the ground at the engine. You could also jump it off with some jumper cables and a good battery. If it works then, you know your battery is bad.
A bad starter relay can cause the amp draw to rise, which will cause the voltage to drop, but I have never seen that happen on an ATV. Not saying it can't happen, it's just highly unlikely.

Well i check the wire's everyting is connected good. The Battery was low due to me trying to start it so much so i charged it and tried again. I got 12v at the starter now but Raptor still wont start guess its back to the drawing board

Mine wouldn't start after sitting for 3 years and the timing was off and the valves were too tight. Adjusted all that and it fired right up.
Oh, yeah, and cleaned the rat nest out of the airbox!

Thats one thing i didnt even think about checking. I only had it for a 2 months used it 3 times before it kick the bucket. Before that i dont think it was used for at least a year or 2. As for it being a bad battery its brand new. I did have to charge it already from trying to get it running.
