450r or 400ex

I'm not looking for a Honda 450 alone but I know that my bike has been running without any problems for a LONG time so I figured I'd ask on Honda.
I've asked a few questions on here before but I'm starting to narrow it down. I was wondering which of the 450's is going to have the least maitenance, and which will last the longest. Basically which would be the cheapest to keep running.
Also I was wondering if I should even get a 450 because most of the riding I do is trail riding, but me and my friends do race in the trails when we ride sometimes and there's alot of open fields where i could crank it out so I was wondering which would be best for what I'm doing.
I do know the 400ex does have a good bit of power and most of the time it would be enough but who doesn't enjoy just being able to hit the throttle and stand it up out of a corner.
I'm 5'9" and 140 pounds
So any advice is appreciated. I was just wondering what some other people thought would be the best.

The 400 is a the all time best trail quad, because its engine will lug down. It is a little slow in open country, but not that bad. Have you done the basic mods to your 400 engine????
The 450's all likes to be reved out (not just the Honda), so they aren't the hot setup for tight trails.
As far as maintenance, all the 450's need frequent oil changes, and any 4-stroke can benifit from a valve adjustment any time. Read about it here:

As for durability among the 450's, the Honda hands down!!! The R is the king of desert endurance racing (like Baja or Vegas to Reno). You know, start it up and ride 1,000 miles non-stop! If you show up to a race on something other than a Honda, you probably won't even finish the race, much less win.....this machine can go the distance.

i got a 400ex and i love it on the trails. for the tighter stuff i can power through anything in second and rarely ever have to touch the clutch. for the tracks though its a lil more work to keep up with the 450's but if you got the experience and the right mods then it isnt too bad. for mostly trail riding though i wouldnt get anything but a 400.

i think that the 400 is a great trail quad but tahts all it is. the 450 is the way to go because you will get the 400 and just dump money into it trying to make it go fast then you start to make the engines reliability questonable.
