Sportsman 300 + 400
#1
I understand that Polaris has a "little" Sportsman now and I've done a little reading on the Popo website and visited the Dealer to look at one.
Questions:
-Does anyone own the smaller 300/400?
-What year did they come-out?
-Who makes them? Polaris or are they like the kids quads made in China?
-Who makes the engine?
- Can anyone give me your 2 cents about them?
I am thinking about a second ATV for my family. I don't need power. I do need a small, small, 4X4 ATV which is reliable.
SO I NEED ALL YOUR HELP AND OPINIONS! Positive and Negative!

Have had the 06 300 hawkeye(1st year sportsman 300) for a little over 2 years now. It has been a great ride, my wife and 10 year old grandson share it. It handles very easily and has plenty of power,if I were looking for a new ride I would seriously consider the 400 for myself. I like the size for riding in the woods and it steers alot easier than my 500......A+ IMO

I have them both and don't have a bad thing to say about either.

I didn't know that the smaller Sportsman is the old Hawkeye. Is it made be Polaris or others?
Also, it looks like for only a $300 difference you can buy a SP500 carb vs the SP400. So isn't that a better deal?
I appreciate the replies..............keep 'em comming!
Thanks,
~MT
P.S Here's the prices I was quoted:
2008 SP300- $4,188
2009 SP300- 4,629
2009 SP550(Hunter Edition.)- $7,950
2009 SP850 (mossy oak camo)- $8,575
I know! I was just curious! LOL!

Hard to believe there that close in price. For $300 the 500 has a more powerful motor a low range option much high towing and load capacity, longer suspension travel, higher ground clearance and larger 25" tires.
Thats alot for $300.

Both are US made. 400 rides better, 300 is lighter. Only downside to either is clearance in mud. Both my machines will go anywhere the big machines go.
Both well made.
Same machines ,except for engine and tire size.

I've had my '07 Hawkeye (SP300) for about 1.5 years now. I could not be happier with my decision. The smaller size is perfect for trails, it has enough power to go anywhere, it rides nice, and has been rock solid reliable. A few easy mod's have made it even better.
