Like Mongrol, I have both the 300 Hawkeye, (now Sportsman 300) and 400 HO and really love these machines! They go ANYWHERE the 500 will go, are MUCH easier to handle, smaller size is a BIG plus in tight trails and get better fuel mileage then their big brothers! You will find that the 400 HO is faster then the 500 HO since it weighs 100+ lbs less with nearly the same HP as the 500, (32 hp for 400 HO vs. 36 hp for 500hp if I remember right).
I really feel that the clutch setup on these machines is superior to that of the bigger Polaris machines and I have never missed the low gear, even skidding sizable logs out of the woods with the 400 HO! And I definitely don't miss the constant shifting from low to high range on demanding the trails!

Try them both out and if you are comfortable with the smaller size, you won't be disappointed!
