Default What is the correct stator voltage & testing the pulse generator ??

I'm trying to diagnose a "no start" problem with my Honda 84 200ES aka Big Red. I checked the ohms on the stator and got 250ohms, within the 100-500ohm range indicated in the factory manual. However, when I check the stator AC voltage I get 35 volts while cranking the engine. Can someone tell me if this is a good or bad AC voltage reading ? What should the stator voltage be ? The only test in the factory manual is for Ohms and I'm within the range indicated.
Also - and this seemed odd - I checked the DC voltage at the coil while cranking and it indicated 12 volts. If I'm showing 12 volts at the coil primary wire should I assume that the stator and CDI unit is OK and I have a bad coil or plug wire ? The plug is new so I know I'm good there.

Also - how the heck do you test the pulse generator, the manual has no specs for it ?

Thanks for any help - god this is frustrating !!

Pulse generator is 30 ohms plus/minus 10

Gotcha - I'll test the pulse generator and see if I'm in the 30 ohms plus/minus 10 range.
Any idea if the AC voltage of 35 volts from the stator is any good ? It seems awfully low but then again the factory manual doesn't say what it should be !

Thanks !!

Default What is the correct stator voltage & testing the pulse generator ??

Tested the pulse generator, I got 30 ohms when connecting my meter to the blue wire and the other side of the meter to ground. I'm assuming that since the green wire coming from the pulse generator goes to ground there's no reading to take on that - other than making sure it's grounded.
So the stator has the correct ohms, the pulse gerator has the correct ohms and the coil's ohms are within spec. (coil wire and plug are new and have continuity).
As I mentioned earlier while cranking I'm getting 12-13 steady volts at the coil, if the CDI unit is bad could this cause the steady voltage? I would think the CDI unit would be switching the coil voltage on and off so the field would collapse, I've already confirmed the pulse generator has the correct ohm reading.
Is there any sure fire way to confirm that the CDI unit is indeed the problem before I spend $100 ? - I hate just throwing parts at the problem.

Thanks again for any help !

Default Testing pulse generator

I have the same exact problem with my 84 TRX200 which has the same ignition system as your big red. I replaced the the CDI module and have the same problems. I get about 40v output from the stator and 7mV from the pulse generator, and 12v input to the coil. I conformed the coil works on my 91 trx 200. The stator and PG resistants check out good. I'm baffled as to what the problem is.

What did you ever find out???

Ya i'm not getting spark. I'm not exactly sure what gap/ spring you are reffering to-- is it the air gap between Pulse Gen pickup and rotor? If so i have not check that yet.
