#1
i know there are different sizes of winchs for atvs but which should i get?
i will be using it to pull the recon out, a foreman, and a honda big red atc?
maybe trees but prolly not?
so which size i know the jeeps use like 9000-10000
i was thinking like 1-4000?

My Warn 2.5ci has done great with the use of a few ****** blocks... each winter I take it apart - inspect it, clean it up, and re-grease it So mine might last a while
When I get a replacement it will probably be a 3000 lb one... You definitely don't need a 4000lb winch.. unless that is all you are doing is winching all the time... to me that is a clue to either get better tires, learn to ride better... or just plain stay out of the craZy deep stuff... I found this site for ya..
Winch Depot Site
Warn - price from above site $9.95 ship - seems like a great deal!
RT25 (2500)-- $290
RT30 (3000)-- $360
XT25 -- $330
XT30 -- $466
Along with the winch, get your self some ****** blocks (pulleys w/hooks) this will double your pulling power, a few 3/8" or 1/2" D-shackles, and a few 6 foot tree-saver straps for those times you will need to anchor to a tree, it is not good for the winch cable/rope to be hooked back onto itself.. I have seen MANY people do that... though I try to run over with my straps first Also ****** blocks are good for re-directing the winch line.. as it is best practice to pull the line straight into the winch... I have links to a site to get pulleys cheap! let me know if you are interested.. I just don't have them handy now...

Ron,
Sorry to inform you.. but those Gorilla, Venom, Viper, Hulk etc winches on Ebay are old model Warn winches. I know this for a fact because a buddy has a Viper 2500 lb winch and it is EXACTLY the same parts/winch as my old Warn 2.5CI. I know this again.. Since I service my winch each winter.. I rip his down as well... Though I make him buy me a 12 pack of Sam Adams Winter Lager
HondaRider,
So get yourself a $100 Viper and see how it goes.. if you don't abuse it... and use ****** blocks/pulleys to double your pulling power you should be good! doubling the pulling power puts less strain on the winch...
As with any piece of equipment if you take care of it, it will take care of you

whats wrong with old technology? if it works i like it. iv got a viper 2500 on my foreman and iv actually pulled my atv off the ground with it. i like them and i havent done a darn thing to it, while i know of other people who bought warn winches and after on season of light use they crapped out. so im inclined to spend my money wisely and buy the $150 winch on ebay and get the same warranty as those $400 ones. what do i have to loose?
like CraZysteve said, if an ebay specail is just an older model warn winch, then your just spending the extra $$$'s on the name.

Well, to start with I wouldn't own it or a warn. I still have the same old ramsey 2500 I got years an years ago, an have never done a thing to it but abuse it. I'd rather pay more an get something good as some cheap crap. Just my opinion though...

There is nothing wrong with the old stuff... Newer warn winches are just water=proof and built a little tougher... personally if and when my current winch dies.. .and it cannot be fixed for short money, then I'll give a Ebay viper winch a shot.. though there are plenty of spare parts out there for the old warn / viper etc winches..
Ron,
I do agree with your point about spend the $$ on a quality brand.. Since the new Viper winches are basically older model warn winches (which I have had good luck with) I would just buy a Viper.. why spend $300 when you can spend a $100... granted I would be able to afford the $300 but why?
As far as the Warn / Ramsey debate... just like the Ford / Chevy debate.. all in what you want.. and what you have had luck with
