winch for a honda recon?
#11
My 11 year old Warn winch that I took off my first ATV still works. I had to replace the switch and that was all. I've only had Warn and Polaris winches and can't say how the others compare to them. Whatever the weight of your ATV is you should get a winch with about 3X the capacity. If you're siting on it while winching you should figure that in too. A 2,500 pound winch is enough for an 800 pound ATV and rider combination.

i know there are different sizes of winchs for atvs but which should i get?
i will be using it to pull the recon out, a foreman, and a honda big red atc?
maybe trees but prolly not?
so which size i know the jeeps use like 9000-10000
i was thinking like 1-4000?</end quote></div>
We put a winch on our Suzuki Ozark which is almost the same size as a Recon.
We got one of the 2000lb Venom Winches off ebay for something like $100 shipped. As I recall, the mounting bracket was something like $40 extra. We had to get the genuine Suzuki mounting bracket because Venom didn't have one for the Ozark. You'll probably need the mounting bracket as well so make sure you factor that into your costs.
We have only had to use the winch once and it worked great at pulling the Ozark out of a hole.

I am looking at getting a winch for my recon also. It's between the Viper and Gorilla winches on ebay and from everything I've researched, the Viper is better if you do a lot of water riding because it's sealed better. The Gorilla will probably do ok for my needs because most of my riding is trails and mud. I haven't fully decided yet but I'm leaning toward the Gorilla simply because it's cheaper. Also, I probably won't have to use it but a couple of times a year, if that.

That's an excellent price!!! That's actually half the price of the one on the Gorilla website plus the mountng plate. BTW, I responded to your respone to my other e-mail message.
Thanks again,

I was looking at the Gorillas initially but I ended up getting a Viper based on input from guys on Highlifter. I got the Viper Classic 3000 for a total cost of $94.99 shipped. It comes with everything you need including remotes, mounting plate, wiring, contactor, and roller fairlead. I can't wait to install it.

whats wrong with old technology? if it works i like it. iv got a viper 2500 on my foreman and iv actually pulled my atv off the ground with it. i like them and i havent done a darn thing to it, while i know of other people who bought warn winches and after on season of light use they crapped out. so im inclined to spend my money wisely and buy the $150 winch on ebay and get the same warranty as those $400 ones. what do i have to loose?
like CraZysteve said, if an ebay specail is just an older model warn winch, then your just spending the extra $$$'s on the name.</end quote></div>
The same warranty as those $400 ones? Just can not believe it.
