Default Carb trouble

My son has a BMX 70 which has been to us so far. However, the last two times he has ridden it, after putting it away for the week, it will not start. It goes without saying that we have to put the charger on it. Then it wings over with the starter OK, there is spark, but no fire. So the last time it happened, I stripped off the carb and disassembled it. Found some crud, but not a lot. Reassembled, and it started right up. Adjusted the mixture, and it ran better than it ever has! So I am feeling pretty good about myself, until next time he goes to ride. No start again!!! What am I missing on the fuel side of this thing? He has so much fun on it, I would like to get him going again before it gets too stinking cold to enjoy it much.
