Default 2006 Sportsman 500 running bad

Hi
New memeber here, just aquired a low hour Sportman 500 HO carb. and after my first ride it seems to have developed a problem. In a nut shell it starts fine, idles great around 1150-1200 rpm and if you drive real slow it OK. But if you accel hard or even go up a slightes grade it run like crap, no power. It has new clean fuel and ne fuel filter, pulled the plug and it was black, sooty looking so I put a new one in BKR6E and still run as decribed. Im in AZ and it is still 80 degrees here.

Any clues on what I can simply check next,
Thanks in advance

PS at idle it smells pretty rich

Try putting some SEA FOAM in it. If you carb is gummed up a little this can help. Remember to look at it this way.

You can try some sea-foam, but your best bet is to pull the carb off and really clean it. Sea-foam is pretty good stuff, but you can't beat a good carb cleaner.

And what about the air filter.
Could be all pluged up or mouse nested.

Hi,

Cleaned out the carb- looked pretty good.
Still starts fine- Idle fine- drive slow it ok
BUT
Give it alot gas or a slight incline like my drivewy it starts sputtering / bogging. no back fire.

Whats should I do next. Sat is tomorrow

thanks

make sure you only have 1/8" play in thumb throttle.every time i get too much or too little my quad runs all kinds of dif. bad. so now i always check especially when playing with carb. adj. is 4" up the throttle cable.

I find it difficult to believe that you would buy something used and not testdrive it first before buying it! LOL!

That said, I would bring it back to the guy/dealer you bought it from and have them fix it at their expense.

Surely they knew it had a problem.

I got it from a friend- The problem may have been there prior but it didnt show up until after a couple hours of riding. I have search and have read on this forum that it could be the stator, pulser, cdi, batt, coil, coil wire. I going to get a manual, battery and coil wire this afternoon. easy and cheeap stuff first.
What kind of plug wire do I need- resistor- non-resirtor?

thanks-will keep you posted
