ATV Accident (Me)
#1
All -
I must say, for riding for a few years now
I really hadn't suffered any unfortunate
accidents to date but yesterday on Thanksgiving
I had a little mishap. I only share this story for
hopes that others may learn from my experiences.
I had pulled both my wife's and mine ATV out yesterday
really starting them up and getting mine ready for hunting
this Saturday (tomorrow). I had got on hers just for a little
start to keep it running after sitting. Only did a small round-about
loop in my back yard (really too small anyways 1/4-acre, but do it from
time to time anyways to start them and run them abit. you get the
idea) going real slow (I mean it, I can't go anywhere anyway,
case in point).
When all of a sudden as I cut the handlebars for a hard right I found
myself launching full-throttle (full blast really) into the corner of my wood
deck. After impact and the quad trying to climb up the deck with my
whole force trying to brake as a reaction, I then hit the kill switch.
FYI, I was only like less than 8 feet from impact, all happened in a
wink of an eye. Really it was the corner foundation (railroad tie) that
saved me, I would of went straight thru anywhere else, head injury
or death if I was more positioned in the center of yard.
Well I am okay all in all, THANK GOD! Little bruised right
thigh as I ate the gear shift but my bad leg fully crushed upward (may need
to get it looked at, hard to walk on it, icing it down alot). Thank
God also for Polaris great wheel well design. No I do not have
insurance on this bike, we had high hopes to sell it, THATS NOT
gonna happen anytime soon, I will just probably keep anyways.
Well after all of this original shock was over and I had time to really think
about what went wrong. My throttle assembly had turned (rolled downward)
as I pushed it during my turn. The thumb throttle slid behind the grip donut
and stuck the acceleration. PROBLEM, I had a loose bolt (my fault somewhere
here as I remember taking off hand guards, prepping her bike for sell), it had
come loose or fell out? NEVER did I IMAGINE THIS ONE!
** My story is meant to caution you that your THUMB ASSY. should be TIGHT
and secure. I do see some folks have their bar mounted devices, brake assy and such tie wrapped. IT SHOULD BE BOLTED! I paid a price, could of been much worse, much much more, I hit this thing real good! **
Check out some pics (in my webshot gallery album and a few here)

People always b!tch because polaris's are "heavy" or "tanks" which no doubt they are but the size and weight of the machine stopped something drastic from happening.Pics don't work?

Okay sorry I was in the middle of edits during you alls reply's please see my updates!
Damage report: Front left headlight, pretty much all the front plastic, cargo box, doesn't look like
I did any front end frame damage. RAD is good, it still starts right up and rides like nothing
happened! I need more time to go over the whole quad though, I was a little banged up but more
disguisted with myself and ohh did I mention TURKEY DAY? My plate was ready, just not a good day
for me on this note!

I'm glad you're still in one piece Rtic. I hope the quad is too. I'm trying to picture how the throttle hung up too.
Hey! Pictures! That was fast.
I see the quad isn't in one piece. I was just saying in another thread how my bumpers have paid for themselves because of the damage they've prevented. Thank God my throttle never stuck and most of my crashes are slow.

Yea sorry I should of labeled these things, I got get better at posting pics in the forum. For moreeasy viewing and better magnification check out my webshot album, click my PICS link in my signature block and choose my new albumb "Damaged SP450 ATV- wifes".
Okay the 3rd pic is a down camera shot of the inside of the cargo box. Yea I surmized that as this thing (Throttleassy.) lost it bearings (literally, bolt missing and it slipped) I pushed the throttle behind the donut piece. Had this been
bolten and tighten down like normal this would of never happened! Also, now that I know this I won't be a big fan of these style grips (me personally no bash guys!) as I have the Mad Dogs on my SP800 no donut between the two. When the impact happened, my inlaws and wife came out as it shook the whole house and was really loud, and the engine kept revving and proceeding until I killed the switch.

I don't yet 700Sport, I could barley pull myself off the bike, my cousin had to come over and pick up all the
pieces and put my bikes away for me. In a few more days I will be pulling them out for a better damage report,
now just trying to take care of me...
