scrambler 400 2x4
#1
i recently bought a 2000 polaris scrambler 400 2x4 for my girl friend. only thing wrong with it is the starter is shot on the thing (so the guy tells me). the bike fires up everytime when pull started, she has a hard time pulling on it though. wanted to see if any one could tell me how to change the starter on it or if i bit off more then i can chew?

put in starter removal in the search category,it will tell you all, welcome to the forum, you need nimble fingers, not too bad.look for instruc.where you don't remove primary clutch............

Ya if anyone tells you to take the clutches off they are full of chit!To make it easier pull the recoil starter off and there is a bolt for the starter behind that (Someone corect me if I'm wrong)There are 5 bolts total.

take the recoil housing off and that will reveal 2 bolts behind the bendix gear (there are 3 bolts on the front but one is removed when you take off the recoil.) on the back side of the starter is a bracket with 2 more bolts. these are a real pain to get out but can be done as long as you dont loose patients. take the airbox off and take a bottome skid plate off. that will give you all the access you need to remove those bolts. for some reason those two never make it back on my starters ;-)

For some reason these starters don't have a long life.I bought an aftermarket one off ebay and it has worked great.

are there any fluids in the recoil housing? rtv silacone when putting back togther? and last off, best to change bendix while there and whats involed on that?</end quote></div>
no fluids. It is a good idea to silacone the bolts. If you buy an aftermarket starter it won't come with a bendix,so if the bendix is salvageable keep it.

if you can twist it one way and it pushes the smaller gear out then its still good. might lightly oil it while you have it in your hand but other than that theres not much you can do with it. your starter might just need to be rebuilt. i would take it apart and check the brushes and armarture to see if theres any problems most of the time the brushes will get stuck because water will get inside the starter. if you work the brushes loose then all is good again.
