Default Question about the Rancher 420s

Four valves according to:

http://atv.off-road.com/atv/Re...Article/detail/558812

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>The engine of the Honda Rancher 420AT is a single cylinder that is longitudinally mounted in the frame. This gets the power out to the driveline without the loss of any valuable ponies in the process. The new head design is equipped with four valves and boasts higher compression with the new and larger intake and exhaust valving. The longitudily mounted engine also narrows up the rider's area to provide a more comfortable saddle.</end quote></div>

Default Question about the Rancher 420s

As I read through that article I have a new question, is that the same cylinder and head as the 07-08 Ranchers or did they redesign everything on the 09 AT model

Default Question about the Rancher 420s

My recollection is that it is two. I sure don't see 4 in that cutaway, and I don't see room for 2 more either! Notice that there is one intake port and one exhaust port, with a valve at the end of each....where in the world would you put another valve?????

Great question, you may want to google that though.

I'm no expert.

Default Question about the Rancher 420s

The 420 engine is kind of interesting, and a bit of a departure for Honda. It is a bit oversquare, so it likes to rev to some extent. In the past, Honda has mostly gone for grunt, using short little pushrods set off kind of to the side, to keep the engine height low. Here, they have an overhead cam setup, yet they are able to keep the engine height reasonable for a lower center of gravity.

All I know is that this little engine can really scream! It rips, right off the bottom. I couldn't be happier!

Honda needs to come up with a lightweight "hybrid" using this engine/drivetrain, just like Yamaha has done with the Wolverine.

Default Question about the Rancher 420s

all i can find on the 420 is that it has 2 valves, and its an OHV engine, not an overhead cam. on hondas website they publisize the 420AT as haveing the same engine setup, and cutaway, as the 420.
