Default 850 clutching question

I noticed yesterday while playing in a field that it didn't seem like my 850 was upshifting fast enough under WOT. In High Range if I went WOT from a slow roll it seems to rev too high IMO, best I could tell it was at or above 7k by 40 mph. Like the clutch wasn't upshifting fast enough making it feel kind of flat from about 30-40. It almost felt as if the tires were spinning,I tried AWD,and it felt the same.
Has anyone else noticed this?
If you nail it while cruising at say 30mph it gets gone, feels great,RPMs seem to be more where they should. But something doesn't feel right to me when nailing it from a stop and running up to 40 or so.
Any one else noticing this? Any thoughts? Could the 27's be affecting the clutching that much in that situation? I would think they wouldn't,but if anything would cause the Rpms to be lower. Then again I am not a clutching expert by any means. If there is one thing I'm weak on with these machines it is the clutching. Guess i need to do some research.
BTW anyone know what the rev limiter is set to on the 850? I've seen 7400 that I know of with no hint of the limiter.

Default 850 clutching question

HO,

Yea, sounds a little strange. The new roller clutching is supposed to be smoother and quicker shifting.

I know the new "Low" gear is supposed to be a lot higher... 39 MPH or something like that. It almost sounds like it's trying to hold it in low... even though it's not in "Low"?

Hopefully, the other 850 guys will go out and give it a try so you have some feedback. Maybe you could talk to the guys at Dalton and see if they have started any work on clutching for the XP's?

Yeah...thing is I don't know if it is always done it,or if something has changed. I'm imagined I noticed it was revving so high because of the new exhaust.
I'm almost sure it didn't act that way with the stock tires.

Default 850 clutching question

One of the guys on HL with an 850 says he thinks it is normal. Maybe, but it seems to me if it is normal we are giving up a good bit of acceleration with the clutching. I mean, the engine doesn't seem to be even close to straining.....like I said, almost like the tires are spinning. I bet with some clutch work this thinks would really roll. Question is what would be the trade off?

Hmmm..... I don't know... does that guy have aftermarket tires and a performance exhaust? I remember you saying that you felt the new exhaust gave you more low end torque. I don't know that much about these machines yet, but it sounds like the clutch can't catch up with the added torque and bite that the tires are giving you? I bet it gets to 40 pretty quickly... maybe to quick now for the clutch?

Default 850 clutching question

He does have larger tires, but he only recently put them on and didn't specify if he had ran it hard with the larger tires. I thought about the extra power too..
It will hit 40mph from a stop within 75 yards or so..
But it feels like it has alot more in it. I'm not as concerned with how fast/quick it is as having it perform like it should....it revvs to high and too easy on a WOT blast from a stop IMO. Like I said if you are cruising about 25-30 and nail it it feels good. But from a stop it revs to the moon.

Do you think its possible your belt could be slipping when you take off, from what you said on earlier posts about smelling your belt?Mine seems fine and i am running the same tires as you.

I don't think that it is slipping. I'm not smelling anything at all. And I made a good 10 passes yesterday, and another 5 or so today testing.
Would it be possible for you see what RPM you are at at ~40mph when you basically get there as fast as you can from a stop?
The way I do it is accelerate to 40 and menatally note a landmark, then switch to RPM and go to the same point.
You probably don't realize how high the RPMs are,the stock exhaust is deceptive and it isn't as noticable IMO.

Thanks

HO,

You don't suppose because of the new exhaust that you are finding some untapped potential in the 850? Perhaps Polaris is soft clutching the machine to protect drive line components. Or maybe they don't even know... but I bet they do.

If what I'm hearing from you I understand correctly, when and if it's available, some performance clutching may really turn these things into real monsters... and probably start "breaking" a lot of stuff. LOL LOL

Anyhow, I hope you can get some comparisons from the other 850 owners.

I don't know Dave. It definitely feels to me like the clutching is holding mine back...
