Default 2000 Rancher ESP problem

Hi, this is my first post after lurking here for months. I have a 2000 Rancher 4x4 with ESP which has been working good for 3000 miles and 530 hours. Once in a while the electric shift would not respond and I would be stuck in the last gear before failure. If I turn the key off for a few seconds it would reset and everything would be fine. Now it's getting worse and several times an hour I have to turn my key off and go back into neutral for a restart and then I am good for a while. I have the factory service manual and there are a few pages of trouble shooting which seems like a long process. I feel there is some sensor or computer problem somewhere. I don't think it is mechanical as worn parts can't be fixed by a " reset " of the key. ???? Who knows. Can anyone shed some light on this? Are there some contacts that need cleaning or something? The shift works fine with the emergency lever if needed. Thanks in advance.

Most common issues with your quad was shift angle sensors. Front of the engine, you will see the shift motor a little below and to the side of it is a tin cover held on with 2 6mm bolts (10mm socket to remove). After removiing the cover the shift angle sensor is accessable. A 4mm allan wrench or allen socket is used to remove the sensor as outlined in your service manual. If this sensor says MEXICO on it, you definately found the problem. They were a poorly manufactured sensor. Installing a new one should cure the issue you are having

Thanks for the reply Gimpster, I will get right on this. I also plan on checking all my electrical plugs in the front for water, corrosion, etc. I will report my findings.
