Default Bad battery or...?

Hi again all. The battery on our '03 Kodiak 450 is dead and won't take a charge. I can start the beast with the pull cord (which is a PITA), but I can let it run all day and the battery will still be dead. I'm assuming it's the battery, but could it be anything else? Is there a way to check the battery to see if it's good or not? Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks!

have you tried putting a charger on it or are you saying it wont take a charge from the machine?
try taking a volt meter and put it on the battery terminals to see what voltage it is. then start the bike up and have somebody hold the throttle. your looking for about 2500 to 3000 RPM's. with the motor running at that speed take another reading at the battery. if the reading is higher than the first then the charging system is fine and you need a new battery.

Put a volt meter across you battery terminals with ATV off. if it reads less than 12v than you know its weak or dead. Then do the same with the ATV running,if it reads higher than 12vs than you know the charging system is working and the battery is done for.

Cool. I'll give it a shot. Not sure why I didn't try that earlier.

Thanks!

Check the fluid level in the battery before you do any of the testing. Top off the battery with distilled water if needed, then trickle charge it.
